I'm afraid I don't agree with you in respect to Japanese-influenced themes combined with the steampunk genre. In fact, Japan was brought out of it's isolation at the height of the Victorian Era. Part of the beauty of steampunk is trying to find a middle ground between reality and fiction. Whether it be converting Star Wars, or American comic superheroes into steampunk-themed icons.
If this artwork looks messy, then it's because I need to improve my skills to bring more harmony to the two themes. But I think combining these two genres can make for a truly amazing concept.

This one definitely adds more Steampunk then Β the next one, and I had a hard time deciding witch I like better. I love the train concept of this one and the other is not as Steampunk, but I like the other one more. Great job on this one though!

Id write a more detailed critique but I don't have a great understanding of steampunk. I usually see a lot of machine elements in steampunk art, and cogwheels, but to add cogwheels to this would probably look cheesy. I also notice a lot of steampunk art colored with a gold/brownish monochrome. Maybe you should test flat colors and see how different it might look then?

The link to your old one is broken, just so you know!
I like this, but it doesn't quite say "steampunk" to me... maybe its just the black and white, sketchy state of it. Then again, I only know so much about the genre...
