Description Another elf picture, sorry! I really will have to try to draw some other things for variety

My scanner isn't great and hasn't picked up some of the lighter shading, sorry

This is my version of Irisse/Aredhel, daughter of Fingolfin etc from JRR Tolkiens 'Silmarillion'. A character I like and one of many which made me wish that either the published Silmarillion was about 4 times as long or that back in the day someone had wanted to publish while Mr. Tolkien was alive

I love how the hair turned out, but it took soooo long (12 hours or so) and my hand hurts now . Mechanical and sketch pencils on 135g paper.

26/08/11 - I haven't looked at this picture in a while and I can see a LOT of things wrong now (need to fix that parting in her hair, it makes her head look huge and also the face could use a little more shaping - oh and a few other things). In defence, I'd only been drawing consistently for about 4 months when I did this I might try to fix the faults anyway.

how big was this paper? and how did you do the hair?

lmmdi In reply to polishdude20 [2011-01-23 22:21:24 +0000 UTC]

A4 sized paper (I don't know what the measurements of that would be?) and I drew the hair by outlining the entire shape of the hair and then shading it in sections by drawing as if I was doing each individual strand (rather than block shading it) if you see what I mean?

If you want, I can send a link to a partially finished scan of this picture (I tend to scan my drafts) if that would make it clearer to see the way I drew it?

This is a nice drawing; way better than I could ever do. However, for me her expression is too soft. I've always pictured Aredhel as being strong-willed and even a bit wild - not at all the traditional elf-woman.

lmmdi In reply to coranglais [2010-05-12 10:37:03 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm yes I've also read of her as strong-willed/wild. I don't know except that this is just how the picture wanted to turn out (perhaps people can't be fierce and wild all of the time ), I think I just wanted to have her looking lost in thought.

I'm a little disappointed you think that it's come across as 'traditional'. Do you have any suggestions in particular to make the character more like you imagine (strong willed etc)? I won't redo the piece but it might be useful information for future.

Thankyou for the compliment by the way

I'm afraid I can't give you any technical advice. My drawing skills are limited to stylized trees and random doodles. Like I said, anything you do is automatically better than my feeble attempts.

I suppose you're right, that she can't look fierce all the time

lmmdi In reply to coranglais [2010-05-12 14:53:34 +0000 UTC]

Oh it's ok, I just wondered if you had any ideas, not particularly technical just perhaps anything you could picture in your mind but it's ok I'm afraid that the only way I could think of would be to make her frown... or something

Mmmm I have to go look at your art now. There will be things you can do better than I and vice versa (and there are some majorly talented people on here who would likely kick both of our butts talent-wise ).

Stylised trees sound good. I'm not good at trees so I tend to stick them in the far background and make them blurry

I should have replied a little more to this. Thankyou so much for noticing this as I had to decide whether to keep the face simple or really shade it heavily to make it more realistic. The character is always described as being very pale though and what finally swung it was like you say - the contrast seemed to work well.

very nice job on the hair. the face could use some shading, though.

lmmdi In reply to silmarlfan1 [2010-04-26 19:27:19 +0000 UTC]

Thankyou I didn't want to go too heavy on the face (in case she ended up as the 'Slightly Smudgy Lady of the Noldor )but my scanner hasn't picked up some of the lighter shading. I'll have to see if a photo-upload looks better. Otherwise, yes I'll shade some more.

Sorry, I hope I didn't seem rude there? I appreciate your advice I just had a look at your Feanor picture and I see from that, that I could shade a little more heavily on the face but still keep it fairly simple.

yeah, just keep it simple and you'll do fine.
