Wow! Forgive me but I'm trying to understand, I dabble a little in sewing - is this felt/wool sort of molded (sculpted if you will) together and then you sew in details in areas?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Lobster-Ball In reply to dittosawr [2012-05-17 05:49:41 +0000 UTC]

There is no sewing at all! It's a special needle with notches in it, which you use to stab raw wool over and over and over and over again. It finally forms felt and you can sculpt with it. It's a lot of work, but I love that it has no seams. ^_^

YOU ARE AMAZING!!!! You don't see felting very often but your work is NOTHING short of spectacular! The detail is accurate and believable. Is there any wire involved in the skeleton or is this really nothing but felt?

Lobster-Ball In reply to caffine-demon-kei [2010-06-17 13:34:50 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much! The bigger critters I've been doing have an armature. Red XIII has a pipe insulation core, craft wire inside his legs, and a pipe cleaner inside the tail. I don't think I could've gotten him to be free standing without the wire. Appa on the other hand could have been all wool, but I was running low, so he has some pipe insulation in his legs and core.

CARDI-ology [2010-05-25 15:54:54 +0000 UTC]

Hi! What is needle-felted? What is the process? I'm just curious to how you got him looking like that. He's AWESOME!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Lobster-Ball In reply to CARDI-ology [2010-05-26 13:32:56 +0000 UTC]

Needle felting is the process of poking wool with a special needle in order to form shapes. The needles are long and really sharp, and they have notches down the sides. If you want to try it, make sure you are up on your tetanus shot because those needles are kind of dangerous. The notches in the needle snag the wool and mat it down. The more you poke, the more solid the wool gets. To start, you kind of make a rough blobby base with the core wool and get things were they are suppose to be, like legs and head. Then you go back and work the pieces until they look right. The color wool is just a thin layer on top, enough to cover the white of the core wool. I think it's a little like working with clay or sculpy, just using a needle to push around the wool instead of your fingers. Red XIII took me about 3 weeks to get him to that level. Thanks! I'm glad you like the end result!

Wow! Sounds extremely time consuming! I have a lot of projects that I'm working on right now.. hopefully I'll get to finishing a few of them and post them to my account soon. I admire your hard work!

Well needle felting projects do take a lot of time, but I find it really fun, so it doesn't seem so much like work. ^_^

What's the asking price, out of curiosity? He might not make it to ACEN.

Lobster-Ball In reply to Meholick [2010-03-21 02:47:49 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!

At ACEN I was going to post his price at $95 USD. He took a long time to put together, and he's the only one.
