well, the process of getting a character to work as a playermodel in gmod is through a whole series of painstaking steps (you have to write a code file for each one, specifying every single face flex, eye position, jigglebone, hitbox, ragdoll colliders and so on), while for vrchat you literally just slap the model into unity and that's pretty much that. world/map creation is just the same; for gmod you have to use the very dated hammer editor, while in unity you can assemble your world using any model you make, and the results are immediately visible in real-time.
I mainly used gmod to mess around with friends, but vrchat just makes this easier in every way; you don't have to subscribe to maps before you can explore them, you just go somewhere and everything that's needed is downloaded on the fly and works every time, no horrible purple checkerboards or errors.
