Henry and Gordon were miserable when Thomas left the yard to run his branch line. They had more work to do. They couldn't rest until it was time to go anymore. Now with Thomas gone, they had to get their coaches themselves, and they didn't like that. Edward sometimes did odd jobs when he could, so did James, but even then, he started grumbling too. "I get no rest!" he would say. Henry and Gordon would shunt their own trains, but James was the one doing most of it, by shunting his trains as well as theirs. Once, Henry was trying to have a rest while James went to shunt his coaches for him. This made James very cross, and spoke rudely to Henry. "What's the matter Henry? there's no rain today. Stop resting and do some work instead." "I'm not afraid of getting wet anymore," huffed Henry. "Anyway, you look silly enough to be a clown with your red paint. Maybe you should be in a circus."

Speaking of the circus. A travelling circus came to town one day, and the engines soon forgot that they were tired. They all wanted to shunt the special trucks and coaches. But Henry and Gordon were cross all over again, when James was tasked by the Fat Controller to pull the train when the circus went away. They did feel dreadfully jealous of James that day.

Later that day, the Fat Controller came to see Henry. "Henry, there seems to be a blockage at the tunnel. You must take some workmen to investigate." Henry then departed. He found two trucks to carry the workmen and their tools. He pushed the trucks along the line, grumbling away. "Pushing trucks. Pushing trucks." They came to the tunnel and stopped outside. The workmen took their tools and went inside.

It was very dark, and quiet. Suddenly. A strange loud noise irrupted from the tunnel. "Help!" shouted the workmen. And they ran out. The foreman was already outside with Henry. "Look, we went to the blockage and started to dig. But it grunted, and moved," said a workman. "Oh come on now, that's rubbish," said the foreman. "It's not rubbish, it's big and alive. We're not going back in there again." "Right!" said the foreman, "Then I'll go in. I'll ride in the truck, and Henry shall push what ever it is out of the way."

'Wheeeesh', went Henry unhappily. He had been shut in the tunnel for being afraid of the rain. But this was worse. Something big and alive was inside. 'Peep-Peep' "I don't want to go in," he wailed. "Neither do I," said his driver, "But we must, clear the line." "Oh dear," puffed Henry. He moved slowly into the tunnel. Then there was trouble, Henry had bumped into something enormous. His driver shut off steam at once. The blockage was indeed alive and very strong. "Ooh-er!" cried Henry. "It's pushing me back!" Out of the tunnel came Henry, then the trucks, and last of all pushing hard, a large cross elephant.

"Well I never did!" said the foreman, "It's one of the elephants from the circus." Henry's driver put on his brakes, and a workman ran to a nearby signal box to telephone for the keeper. The elephant then came towards them. They gave him some sandwiches and cake. So he forgot he was cross, and remembered he was hungry. He then drank three buckets of water, without stopping. He just started to drink another, when Henry let off steam. That frightened the elephant, and shot water out of it's trunk and went all over Henry's smokebox. The driver, fireman and workmen found it all a huge laugh. But poor Henry didn't.

A little while later, the elephant's keeper came and took him away. The workmen jumped into the trucks, laughing at their adventure. Henry then pulled them home, hissing to himself. "An elephant pushed me! An elephant hooshed me!" He was sulky all day, and his coaches had an uncomfortable time. That night in the shed, he told Gordon and James all about the elephant. They did feel sorry for him, but still teased him. "First the rain, then an elephant. Whatever will you be afraid of next?" said James. "Joking aside," added Gordon, "I must say that out of all of us, you have been treated badly, haven't you my dear Henry." Thinking back on what had happened to him that day, Henry could only agree.
