very cool tutorial ! Just one question: I tried making a knife about a year ago but found the filing very difficult. Actually I had to use a grinding wheel because it was simply not doable with a file and it took forever to take material of, the stone even wound up rounded on the sides. I have no idea what kind of steel it was (they never put such info on the pricetags at the local DIY store) ...
But, is there a way to make such steel softer again? (like by heating it up)?
thanks

You need to anneal it. Which for that type of metal is heating it to non-magnetic temperature, which is probably some where round 1,600F degrees. Then putting it in lime, a white powder, that you should be able to get at any local hardware store. This will take it a long time to cool down. You should be able to file it after that. Then once you have all your filing and everything done, you will need to reharden it.
Places like www.riversidemachine.net and other knife suppliers have better knifemaking metal. It is capable of being filed and forged easily from the beginning, so you don't have to anneal it. I hope this helps!
