Description The last Queen of Yugoslavia, Alexandra (born on March 25th, 1921) was the posthumous daughter of King Alexander I of Greece and his morganatic wife, Aspasia Manos, though she wasn't officially recognized as a member of the Greek Royal family until a law was passed that retroactively recognized marriages of the royal family even though not dynastic basis (she obtained the style of Her Royal Highness and Princess of Greece and Denmark in 1922, just before Greece disposed the royal family the first time around). After bouncing around Greece, Italy, and finally the UK after the invasion of the Axis Powers (and even after the Greek monarchy was restored) during World War 2, she would meet the young King Peter II of Yugoslavia who also also in exile after his country was also invaded by the Nazis. The fell in love and wed in 1944 and gave birth to a son, Crown Prince Alexander, a year later. But the bliss was short-lived as Yugoslavia abolished their monarchy and turned to communism, leaving her and Peter without their crown and struggled to adapt as private citizens, especially for Alexandra who never had step foot inside Yugoslavia, and their marriage was filled with struggles, Peter's womanizing and alcoholism and financial strains nearly ending in divorce or worse, Alexandra's suicide attempt until her son save her in the nick of time, until they were able to reconcile and lived in France. However, that didn't last long and Peter left and moved to the United States in 1967 where he eventually passed away in 1970. Alexandra herself, after being emotionally drained for years of struggles, death, and more, passed away on January 30th, 1993 in West Sussex from cancer. She was initially laid to rest in Tatoi, Greece next to mother until 2013 where her remains were moved to Serbia and reburied in the Royal Crypt at Oplenac along with her husband, mother in law Queen Mother Maria, and her brother-in-law Prince Andrew in an official ceremony.
I based my pencil and graphite portrait of Queen Alexandra from a photograph of her from the 1940s either shortly before her marriage or shortly after her marriage.
