An England sketch for you all X3
it's funny cause throughout the whole process i wasn't happy at all with what i was drawing; more often than not i was considering giving up and rubbing the whole damn thing out but then after i finished it i was very happy with the result X3

i dunno, i think the whole thing works quite well ^^ i like the shading and i think it's one of my better drawings of England :3

of course it could be better *slapped*

enjoy and comment!~

Pretty good! He'd look realistic if he wasn't anime-styled, but I don't like drawing realistically anyway.

...does college normally last only a year in England?

well it depends what course you're doing (oh and i guess college means something else in America - here it's like a stepping stone to university)
i was doing an "Art & Design Foudation" course, which is only one year; there are some students doing a degree course which is 2 years.
And then there's uni which is 3/4 years depending on the course

...DAMN the British education system is weird. We just go elementary school==>middle school==>high school==>either college or straight into the workforce. Then again, you guys probably think that's weird....

If I decided I wanted to go to university in England after I leave HS, would I have to take a college course? Or is your college course sorta bound up in our high school?

Not really, it's pretty much the same as the US (i'm just bad at at explaining XD), we just call things different things XD.
Here, you go to Primary school (elementary), then secondary school which is middle school and high school rolled into one. So you go to Primary which has Reception (kindergarten), year (grade) 1-6; at about age 11 you go to year 7 in secondary, do GCSE exams (do you have those?) in year 10&11. Then you can chose to go to sixth form for 2 more years (where you'd be in highschool at that point), you can do SF at your school or go somewhere else (another school or to college), OR you can chose not to go to SF and go to work instead.
After A-levels in SF (do have those too?) you can go to work or Uni. you can also go to college to get some more qulifications, you don't HAVE to go to college. (it sounds complicated but its not i'm just explaining it weird XD). then after your course in college (if you do one) you can go to work/uni/gap year.

you probably wouldn't have to take a college course, but then it depends what you wanted to do. i did my art course cause i wanted to get a qulification while i was figuring out what i wanted to do, and i like art so it made sense (i now realise i want to study acting at Uni XD i'm an actress, not an artist XD). With art Uni's, you don't HAVE to have a Foundation qualification, but it's recomended. you DO need a foundation if you want to be an art teacher (as well as a teaching degree obviously).
that took WAY to long to explain and i probably went into too much detail sory if it confused you :'3 in short: College is a place outside of school where you can go if you want to get qualifications, but you don't HAVE to go (and it's not AS good as Uni). college treats you like an adult though and not a school child.
I'M SO SORRY FOR THE LONG REPLY!! *cries*

We do have our own version of GSCEs, which are called SATs/PSATs. I don't know if we have A-levels or anything though. What is sixth form? Because I'm unclear on that.

If I was going for writing, would I want a college course?

oh yeah we had SATs as well but we took them in year six (i think yours are harder XD), but then the Government got rid of them anyway cause supposedly they were pointless XD. yeah, A-Levels (or equivalents) are really important here, you can't get to Uni without them XD

Sixth form happens at the same time as high school for the US so... *searching brain for American-isms* last year, i would've been a senior in high school (that was my LAST year of Sixth form). it's just when you're at the top of the school and older than everyone else XD (another perk is that one doesn't have to wear uniform in sixthform >3<). though obviously there are lots of exams X'D

if you were wanting to do a writing course... then you would probably want to do a college course; even if only to show the Uni you want that you've had acedemic experience; it might also help you see what the course will be like in Uni ^^ I'm pretty sure there are lots of Creative writing courses, it's one of those things where it helps if you have lots of experience ^^ Though once again, it's not necessary :3

We have different standardized tests in middle school. SATs are hard but HSPAs (required standardized tests) are easy because they're built for core kids as well as AP. XD Okay, so sixth form is like extra senior classes?

lolo-loco In reply to A-Musical-Infection [2012-06-26 16:38:30 +0000 UTC]

oh cool fair enough ^^ in GCSEs we choose 5 subjects we want to take (like, Geography, music, drama, history, german) as well as the required subjects (science, maths, english etc) and we have test in all those DX lol so what do American's have in highschool then? exams i mean
no, it's more like... right, Middleschool is year 7-10 and then highschool is year 11-13 - Sixthform is year 12&13. so it's not like EXTRA senior classes, it's like two senior years. ...yyyyeeeaahh? yeah, that's what i'm going with XD

A-Musical-Infection In reply to lolo-loco [2012-06-26 20:11:11 +0000 UTC]

...wow. Um, okay, I will never understand your education system.

We have HSPAs, which cover math, English, and science, that are made for everyone between core and AP (lowest-highest, if you guys call it different things. I'm an AP kid so the HSPAs are gonna be a JOKE.) Then the (P)SATs, which are math and English, but there are also subject tests for things like chemistry. There are AP exams for those who take AP classes, and, obviously, finals at the end of every year. Pretty sure finals are constants.

My school district went middle school 5-8, high school 9-12. But for you guys I'd techincally have just graduated middle school? Weird. And college seems like two senior years but all you take is electives, and that sounds SO COOL.

huh, that's really interesting *nodds approvingly* seems to make sense XD
both the systems just seem complicated to the other person XDDD but hey, we understand what we've grown up with X3
cool, so it's only a few years till you can go to Uni then? awesome! that's gonna be fun for you!~ X3

Two years, yes. C: I kinda want to go to Cambridge, which is why I was pestering you about the British education system.

On a vaguely related note, did you know that Oxford only lets 8 English majors out of fucktons in per year? EIGHT EESDRFYTYGCEEEEEEEAHUerif

It sure sounds like it! I have a much better chance there. I think 1/4 of Enflish majors get in, as opposed to 1/100 like in Oxford. Their website sounded stuck-up, too. Like I was reading it and they sounded snooty, whereas Cambridge was like "Come to us! We're nice and friendly and full of cool British kids! We love youuuuu. Also we're cheaper than 4/5 schools you want to go to in your silly America. 24 HOUR LIBRARIES!"
