Description The sea serpent at the end of "Son of Kong" (1933), realized in one shot as an amazing stop-motion puppet. This close-up in the movie seared itself into my brain when I was a kid.

I and every kid I knew was familiar with "King Kong" from -- the womb, it seemed like.Β  Yet I didn't succeed in watching "Son of Kong" until I was 30 or so.Β  Seeing Robert Armstrong and others playing the same characters -- but doing and saying different things -- at that late date in my life -- it was like falling into some alternate world.

I hate how movies always showed lost worlds sinking into the sea or being destroyed by volcanoes at the end.Β  I tried to write a little article called "Who Died and Made Her a Seismologist?" once, where I argued Skull Island didn't (entirely) sink.Β  I think part of my argument was that the POV of the camera was on the main part of the island, looking out to sea at an area of land that did sink (with Kong Jr.).

And, as your picture shows, that was quite an elaborate sea monster O'Bie whipped up for such a short appearance!

It took a while before I saw "Son of Kong" too, the main problem being that it wasn't available in my native Sweden. I rented it in the Us when I visited my dad there. It's not up to the standard of the original "King Kong", of course, but it's a charming movie nonetheless. I think the closeup of the sea serpent at the end is a standout.
Yeah, it seemed that every prehistoric jungle adventure had to end with a volcano erupting, or some other calamity. Even "One Million Years B C" and "When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth" go up in smoke at the end.

Son of Kong had some good beasties in it, when they finally got around to the island. Although fewer in number, they were all well animated, had some character, and they were on the right scale for Kong, Jr. I remember the sea monster for its brief appearance to mete out poetic retribution for the bad guy. "All by yourself, eh lunchmeat?"Helped establish the cliche of drawn-out death by dinosaur/monster that was mocked by SNL one time.

I really like the Son of Kong monsters, but they are a weird lot. Stop-mo dino films have the most dramatic deaths, yes

You know, this would make for a Great Dragon.Β  Those brows, and that smirking expression...could easily put him in a fantasy film, with other monsters...and guys with swords and treasure horde. Wait, Son of Kong has all that. Never mind!

Son of Kong does have more fantasy-tinged critters than the original Kong.

I remember first seeing this guy in "The Dinosaur Scrapbook". He made an impression on me. It's WAY more detailed than the other creatures in the movie, so that might have something to do with it. Excellent work!

Yes, this critter looks very organic, although the Styracosaur looks nice in close-ups. It was apparently a leftover from "King Kong."

You've never seen "Son of Kong"? It's not like Kong at all, actually. It's more comical, but it does have some nice monsters, and Kong jr fights two of them.

Jesus....I barely remembered this guy was in the film. Just sort of shows up out of nowhere to eat someone. I believe the film was calling it an Elasmosaurus...though it is a very liberal interpretation of what the dino was suppose to look like. Obviously it's just a dressed up head piece of the amazing Brontosaurus model that was used in the original.

Still, it is fun to see people do art for things that are this obscured. The Nothosaurus though stole the movie for me. It just shows out of nowhere and looks like a dragon. Idk. Still, this is a cool piece. I like that you went with this color scheme...as opposed to the green and gold one that I have seen colorized images of this guy.

I always imagined this monster as having muted, very earthy colors.
Son of Kong is interesting for its choice of creatures. It's a weird variety compared to the Charles R Knight all-stars of the first Kong.

Apatosaurus= "Decietful lizard." Brontosurus= "Thunder lizard." I know what sound cooler to me
Apparently, not all paleonthologists have agreed on Brontosaurus being a separate genus, but I'm going with that.

This monster was actually built over an existing Brontosaurus puppet, and re-used as a sea serpent in "Son of Kong."

It sort of reminds me of the brontosaurus in the first movie only with big eye brows.

I barely remember what happens in the sequel, so i forgot all about this creature.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Loneanimator In reply to jotunnheimar [2018-04-17 07:12:07 +0000 UTC]

Actually, this monster is the same head used for close-ups in Kong, when the brontosaurus eats the sailor climbing a tree. Puppet builder Marcel Delgado simply added more details and texture to that big puppet head and neck, and the same was done with the mechanical Bronto used in the Kong raft scenes. Son of Kong was made in such a haste they had to re-rig some existing puppets and sets.

Yes, the production pace must've been neck-breaking. I'm surprised RKO rushed out Son of Kong like they did, though. King Kong was in production for a very long time, and look how great it turned out. Son of Kong also made money, but not nearly as much as the original.
