I loved how goofy but angry his characters were.
always thought Start the Revolution without Me was his most underrated film.

I mean it is a dumb film in a way, but I liked seeing Gene both goofy and arrogant as both sets of twins.

He's just known for comedy roles, but he did quite a bit of stage acting where he really showed his range. I just think he was a great actor, as well as writer.

Didn't know he was in theater stuff, too. Wonder if theres any recordings of any of his acts there?

Probably not. It generally seems very few stage performances have been recorded for posterity.

My favorite Wilder movie is either Young Frankenstein, orΒ The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes' Smarter Brother, which I still think is his craziest and absolutely hilarious
The Willy Wonka film was, for some reason not a hit or very well marketed in Sweden. My guess is that by our standards back then it was simply percieved as being too scary for kids. The film is almost unknown over here, though the Dahl book has been read by generations of children. We have our own very cherished version, a TV series which was sort of animated using tons of exciting illustrations by a Swedish children's book artist, and the story was read by one of our best known actors. I'm sure this sounds incredibly simplistic, but it was perfect children's TV, and my generation, and others after me, have grown up with it.

Nice. Though I doubt Roald Dahl really cared because I remember he didn't want Gene Wilder as Wonka.

I think Dahl wanted Spike Milligan instead.

That was what I heard from IMDB. Though he did like Angelica Huston as the Grand High Witch.
