There's a truly baffling version of this on Amazon Prime. It's called The Iron Super Man in menus, Roboter der Sterne in the actual movie, dubbed in German and subbed in English. Yep.

I've heard about that version, but I haven't seen it. It's best to stick with the original, I'm guessing.

And Mach Baron has one of the most rocking theme songs of any Japanese superhero show ever, which is an impressive feat.

It is a kick-ass theme, compared to the many jolly marches that start off most of the tokusatsu shows.

I actually like this show much more so than the original Red Baron series. Got to love the main badguy and his mood changing super sayian hairstyle. Most of the robots were really cool....albeit a bit garish in color choices though. Glad to see this get a little love. Be awesome to see you tackle some more 70's style shows like this. Iron King, Silver Kamen, Space Wolf Juspion, and Dinosaur War Izenborg, are but a few that I can think off off the top of my head. Though there are dozens ya know.

Mach BAron has a few tricks of his own up his sleeve, and feet and head. But a good old slug-out is always the best way to finish off a bad guy.

Β One suspects it might just be the most satisfyingly visceral ... assuming you remember to carry an ice pack for your hands afterwards, if you are mere flesh-and-bone!Β

This show and the preceding show, Super Robot Red Baron, have, as you might expect, the usual Tokusatsu TV show set-up. There is a villain out to dominate Earth, and the giant robot, and the team of heroes working with it, fight various giant menaces each episode. In these shows it's other mechanical monsters instead of the usual rubber suit kaijus. All the robots are mostly men in suits, except for shots where they do stuff the suits can't do, like flying, shooting rocket fists, spinning heads, etc. Models are used for that. It's all very charming and colorful.

Maybe you've heard of the show preceeding Mach Baron -Red Baron? If you google "super robot red baron" you might recognize that character. Those red robots were made into a fair number of toys.

I forgot to reply to yor question about how this series is, quality-wise. It's pretty much what you'd expect from a Tokusatsu TV show. Some of the model work is very obvious, but all of it is pulled off with great entusiasm and creativity.Β
You can see the whole episode I've illustrated above here (only in Japanese):

You gotta do Dinosaur War Aizenborg even if the humans are all anime, lol!

Oh yeah I forgot, heh. The English version of the movie is all thats needed to watch...it seems like a cool way to film without any actors (at least the ones not in suit). The earnest and bizarre duality is what I always look for in stuff like this.

Have you seen "Tekkouki Mikazuki" by Keita Amemiya, the guy who made "Zeram" and "Moon Over Tao"? It's probably the best-looking Tokusatsu TV show ever produced, and apparently it's the most expensive one. It's sort-of a tribute to the Tokusatsu TV genre. If you can think of a Tokusatsu trope or clichΓ©, it's in there. Plus a giant flying watermelon slice that transforms into a monster.

Well sadly, since there is no subtitled version, I canβt give each of the robots their page. The images is the best I can do. I can however do pages on the Red Baron Robots. But right now Iβm trying to get as much screenshots of giant monsters(except from Tsuburaya because a wikia site already has those) from different toku shows and even from Super Robot Anime.

I remember that robot - in the 80's, Spanish dubbed they cut down and put some of the episodes together as a movie and called it Mazinger Z and referred to the main villain as Dr. Hell.

Indeed they did!Β It's called ROBOTER DER STERNE and a chap I used to know on the message boards said the German version had been dubbed into a comedy!Β I can't remember if that's true, but it has been issued a couple of times on DVD in Germany (at least once with English subtitles).
