Lol I kinda made it up.

theres a gene in a vampires system, when it activates it causes the body to kinda panic making blood suddenly rush to the lungs making it hard to breath, it's either you die straight away or suffocate for hours.  It also makes their thirst for blood stronger.

Yeah, I bet it hurts, suffocating is one of my biggest fears.
