Description
I was jogging along a dirt road just before the dawn. I ran along a creek that was stretched just beside the road. As I kept on running, I saw a pair of headlights glowing in the darkness of the summer night. The air was warm and as I kept on running, I started to recognize human silhouettes. I noticed that it was two men arguing. One looked taller and more built, this was the older one. The second man was almost as tall as the other, but slimmer. I saw the slimmer guy carrying a bumper jack and he looked angry, as I could hear him swear. I thought that this was pretty serious, so I just kept on jogging in that direction.
Just as I was getting closer to the car, I saw a bump on the road. I wondered: “What could it be?” I was going to take a better look but I thought it would be better if I hid and listened to what those men where arguing about. As I hid behind some bushes and listened, I saw the younger man lifting the bumper jack and hitting the bump-like object. Just then I noticed the bump move,”It’s a turtle!” I realized. I wanted to run up to that guy and hurt him really badly for what he had just done. Right then I heard the other man yelling at the younger one to stop. He was telling him how it would be different if the guy fought the turtle in the water. How the turtle would actually have a chance to defend himself. ”Yeah he’s right,” I thought to myself ”the turtle would have better chances in the water then in the middle of this dirt road lying here helplessly.”
So what if he’s in their way? This isn’t a good enough reason to abuse an innocent animal! And plus just a little push would do the trick: the turtle would start moving forward and their problem would be solved. It’s not like he stopped there on purpose. Maybe he’s tired since he’s not made to walk on a dirt road. Maybe he was just taking a quick break. What would the kid do next? A million thoughts and questions ran through my head. And then the biggest one came to me: “Should I do anything or should I just let the father handle this?”
As I sat there all shook up thinking about this poor turtle that might have to pay with his life, I decided not to wait anymore. I came out from behind the bushes and I walked closer to the car. Just as the son was going to take another swing at this innocent animal, I shouted: “Stop it!” They both turned around and looked at me with questioning expressions on their faces. I kept talking: “How would you feel if you were in this turtle’s shoes?” I addressed the son,”He’s helpless and obviously he can’t defend himself in the middle of this dirt road. He’s made to live and fight in the water, not here. It’s like if someone stuck you in a whole bunch of sand and told you to fight them with your arms and legs all buried and with no way of defending yourself. How would you feel then? How would you feel if someone was beating you up and you had no way of escaping? I think that you have no conscience, since you’re able to do such a thing to that innocent animal!”
As I was done yelling at them, I could see they were looking at me like I’m nuts. I think I gave them enough to think about, I decided to leave. I started jogging along the road again and when I got to the turtle, I gave him a gentle kick. The lightly injured turtle went waddling forward and disappeared in the creek.
