Redone! Ichigo is now cell shaded and looks far better when compared to the old version. If anyone wants a copy of the old version (which I doubt) then let me know and I'll put it somewhere. *le shrug*

Thank god. *relief* The eyes took hours to tweak. *shudder* Next time I'll stick with the K.I.S.S. method (Keep It Simple Stupid).

Well done! But there is a bug with his eye (left).
Why not trying to escape Kubo's way of colouring? Add some light in his hair and eyes, in eyes there is always reflection of smth!
But this is much better done! Really good!

Hmm, I need to make both pupils a bit rounder; that should help.
I'm not that skilled or confident with cell shading yet to try for more than two tones for each colour at a time. The same applies to light sources. When I'm more practiced with the style in general I might have a go changing things but until then I'll take it slowly. The shading is meant to be semi-flat at the moment; at least until I start going for a more realistic look.
I agree, it is MUCH better. Thank you~ I'll do some more tweaking with the colour, some of the shade lines are bugging me.

no but I do think you should add the white to the other eye...you have more white in the right than left and that's what's giving him a cockeyed appearance

Can you do that?

Hmmm, I'll see what I can do. I tried to balance it properly the first time and it still didn't look right, but I'll have another go with fresh eyes. Getting the right amount in the right position could be a pain, so I might just reduce the amount in the left eye. *ponder* I'll see what works best.

Ok, here is my recepy: what do you use? Photoshop or SAI?
Than using Photoshop: create a new layer above the one with colour.
Switch him to Luminousity mode, than use about 55% pressure and add some strikes to the hair. In order to have shadows, put some multiply mode in the same way. I do not how does it work in Photoshop, but this works in SAI.

I use Photoshop.
Aye.
I know the technical details, but it's the actual positioning of the shadows that I suck at. It's just something that needs to come with time. Thanks for the advice anyway.

0.0 I'd love that. If you can make it a visual tutorial like TamberElla's that'd be really cool. The more examples the better~

Well, sai only, as I just said...but Sai is Japanese program and many do colour in it...

Oh I don't mind if it's in SAI. I can still apply the same techniques to PS anyway. It's the conceptual knowledge I'm after.

At least it's noticeable.

Thanks, it is a lot better than the first version. I was cringing every time I saw it so I opted for a recolour.

Well if you practice them there will be good. Try to look in the manga anyway. I bought two books of manga in Austria. They are German!

Loona-Cry In reply to Halcyonvermilion [2011-08-25 20:45:39 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I should put in more practice. I need to spend a day collecting some manga panels for consistent more referencing and drawing. I find I get better help from other artists when compared to books. ^^

I do collect manga, but artists in general are helpful too. I learn better from verbal instruction than by just doing.

Well, I'm actually half blind. I prefer to listen than look in most instances - my hearing is better than my eyesight. I often get told off for calling singers crap because only I can hear their voice fragmenting during notes.

Bad luck on my part; genetic defects for the win. I can tell. I'm only really into visual art because I can't afford an instrument. Expensive things.
