Description "Few people grasp the complicated nature of keeping a game entertaining. Take, for example, the event-to-loot exchange rate. If players get too much loot, they stop caring about it and have no incentive to care about the story. If the players get too little loot, they become obsessed with it and completely ignore the story. Only by keeping the exchange rate carefully balanced can a GM keep their players in line. It's still a lot easier, though, than just making the game fun all the time."

Uh oh, looks like the GM is losing control of the players. It will take drastic action to get them back in line, and maybe even a little backup...

It's a great pressure release for the GM. "They burnt down what?! How will I keep the guards from slaughtering the lot of them? ...oh, maybe some fetch-quest blackmail!"

It's saved my players the bother of rolling up new characters more than once.

If they're anywhere as crazy as my players, I can believe wholeheartedly that death would have been the result! XD (If my games didn't tend to be so cinematic, my players would have rerolled up a small community every couple of sessions!)

Event-to-loot ratio is a very tricky little beast. It also helps if the GM is in charge of dinner/snacks-- sometimes bribing the players themselves helps.

At this point, I'm already trying to figure out likely stats/alignment for characters.

My friends made me take INT as the dump stat. My character could make up for it with wisdom, but I knew entirely too much about anatomy for them already.

I always made my players roleplay low intelligence and/or wisdom. I had one who did a very good job playing a mentally-impaired dependent, and awarded him XP for it, but he still got himself killed as soon as reasonably possible. (I gave him a little boost with his next character for arranging a believable death, though.)

I think my favorite character in our party was the immensely charismatic barbarian with a negative intelligence modifier. His attacks actually got a lot of benefit from the charisma, but we teased that we needed to hire someone to play the character that points him in the right direction.
