somebody dun messed with her lil sis and Gleaming Shield is about to open up a can of whoop assold old old drawing i decided to finish
Shining Armor gets hit with good ol' rule 63-aka gender bender
I like Shining Armor okay, I guess (especially his character in the IDW comics), but I feel he'd be a lot more interesting as a mare. It would add to that whole sisterhood/female empowerment thing MLP: Fim has going for it, and I haven't really seen too many strong female leader characters who like corndogs and Dungeons and Dragons and rescuing ancient lost empires from malevolent kings
I also ship Gleaming Shield with Princess Cadence, so lesbian magic horse princesses yay
I tried out some new, more experimental coloring on this one. And I really like how her bodytype came out-like a sturdier Fleur di Lis. Also, I don't know who originally thought up the name "Gleaming Shield" for a r63 Shining Armor but it wasn't me, credit should go where it is due

I wasn't really into Gleaming Shield as a character until I saw this design. It's so perfect. I bet she'd be a lot more interesting than Shining Armor, to be honest.

I have to kind of disagree
MLP already has the sisterhood/female leaders/female empowerment thing going on a lot. So much so that Shining being a big brother and leader is refreshing and makes for some diversity as he is one of the few major stallions in the show. I love the female cast, but I wouldn't want them ALL to have to be female. A little balance makes the world more believable.

Shining Armor was also created to distort the "Damsel in the Distress" trope, as well as being an awesome brother to Twilight.
And as much as I love Shining Armor an Cadence's relationship they seem to vague and generic to me, much like your average Disney couple, and I'm hoping that Flurry Heart's birth and the duo becoming parents will give them more characterization

It's less that there's too much sisterhood and female empowerment and more that balancing it out with other themes isn't a bad thing IMO.Β
Little girls have big brothers too and many might relate with Shining and Twi for that. Moreso heΒ is one of the few examples of a male with any power in MLP. Between Celestia, Luna, Cadence and Twilight he brings the only male to the royal ensemble.
Not to mention, Cadence is already kind of a big sister to Twi, so I don't think we miss that aspect either.

In my headcannon, she's Shining's long lost twin sister.Β She's also been in the royal guard, but theyΒ have never known that they're twins until some time in the future.
OR, she could be Twilight's and Shining'sΒ cousin.

I wanted her character design to reflect strength and bravery, so she's got a more masculine face, a barrel chest, and a long horn. Not every mare has to have the same cutesy little snout.

I really like this woman version of her. I too have wondered what it would be like if Twilight had a sister instead of a brother, it'd be interesting, but I do like Shining Armor as well.
