CASC (Character And Species Concept): "Kalak"Race name: Not named in the Starmap databases, but They call themselves Kalak.
Homeworld: Unnamed in the official starmaps. Nicknamed "Nest of Shadows." Has a strong gravitational field, and is shrouded by dark clouds that extend from the atmosphere into outerlying space.
Defining features: Black/ash gray skin, Large main eyes, four smaller eyes on the brow, Lithe bodies, wiry muscles, light-reflecting hair-seems mirror-like-, red or white eye color, sometimes both.
Religion: War gods, rituals dedicated to said gods. No church or true structure other than some shamanistic practices. The gods don't seem to have a hierarchy either. Rather, they too are at war alongside the clans.
Government: Anarchy/Clan based. Different clans wage war over the holy lands, including the ancient ship that brought their ancestors there. Clans are formed through family ties, indentured servitude, mutual alliances between families, unions between families, etc. Otherwise, no wide-spread system of government.
Society: Based on "Might is right." If a strong fighter defeats another in combat and spares their life, they are allowed to take the loser as their servant or slave until the loser re-challenges them for their freedom. This is known to happen to entire clans at a time during wars. Once bound, they are driven by honor- the only part of their culture they haven't lost, it seems- to remain loyal to their better. Saving another Kalak's life likewise puts them in an honor-bound position to repay the debt in the same manner-until then they must attempt to pay the debt any way they can.
The guns this character is using are:
1) a Spike-launcher (right hand); a machine-gun-like weapon capable of launching sharp metal spikes at a foe at short to mid-range distances.
2) a Flechete Shotgun (left hand); a shotgun-like weapon that fires bladed shrapnel rather than pellets or other projectiles. Short range, very difficult to use.
The knife at her waist is a Kukri, which is one of the nastiest weapons I've ever seen. Seriously, look up what they can do.

Is there a reason why they would use strictly flechettes for the shotguns instead of more conventional ammo? I'd imagine flechettes would be more expensive, and you say they're harder to use.
If they have the tech to make shotgun-like weapons, why don't they have long-range guns?

Simply put, they're a race of warriors, not soldiers. They don't care about what is most efficient, but what is most VIOLENT. They care about their honor, and to them, sniping isn't all that honorable. And while they DO have something that's mid-to-long range, it's just as brutal as the rest, and is still mainly used in closer ranges.
They've been devolving in terms of technology, where they used to have solar-powered lasers, now they have physical ammunition. They also for the most part don't have armor. I just drew this character in armor because she eventually gets it from offworlders.

It seems to me that they wouldn't last very long against other more pragmatic races, unless they're just that much more durable than most other races.

They're not only VERY durable, but they're also excellent killers. However, they don't encounter the more pragmatic races often because their planet is rather far away from the other, more civilized cultures. They'd fall easily against the Zihim's Laser tech, but humans wouldn't stand a chance against them on their own home turf.
Thanks for the compliment. I honestly have some trouble designing armor like this, since I want it to look like it would both protect and allow movement easily.
