Kurumi is Asuka's closest friend. I do mean close. at least from Kurumi's perspective they are very very very close. yes despite how cute and innocent she looks she is the obsessed yuri girl and she obsessed with Asuka to a pretty much yandere level. She is also known as War Nurse Kurumi who fights with a giant syringe specializing in healing and poisoning and drugging. She is obsessed with Asuka because 3 years ago Kurumi was severely bullied. I mean like super bad bullying like her bullies would repeatedly dunk her head in to the toilet and even put a funeral picture of her dirtied hair from the toilet on her desk and the teacher even ignored her. she was on the verge of considering killing everyone with her powers till Asuka stepped in and tells her to go with her and for Kurumi that was what saved her. Asuka was the one person who stood up for her. despite her obsession with Asuka she did form a comraderie with the other magical girls to where she hates being called the "Magical 5" which is what the public calls Asuka and the other surviving magical girls. she hates that title cause to her that's the public essentially denying the fact 6 other magical girls fought along aside them and lost their lives trying to protect everyone since all her and other surviving magical girls are survivors. again another reason why I relate to this anime a lot more than I thought I would is cause that is also correct and relatable. it's true soldiers are the heroes who put their lives on the line for their country but what most fail to realize is at the end of the day we're just survivors out of thousands who have died on deployments. So for me that bit of reveal made the best sense out of other anime that try do war arc stories but ultimately fail and miss the point of what it means to be at war. to be fair I will say One Piece is the one shonen series that got it pretty close to right so kudos to oda on that one. if you haven't seen or read the whole rescue ace arc then go check it out.
