Description A Remake of a very old work of mine, which you can find here:Β  fav.me/d1ke6yp
Due to lack of time, I made this REALLY quickly, but I'm happy with the result and a fine showcase of how much I've grown since back then.
More to come soon!

Hope you like it!

IS this one made in sketchup too? Β I remember getting your Trek ship that the previous version of this work was done in and I liked it quite a bit. Β

Yes, like back then the vessels have been created in SketchUp, but have been rendered in Kerkythea (I don't quite remember if I used that back then as well or not). I'm glad you liked my Trek vessel

WideFoot In reply to LordDoomhammer [2015-05-15 19:24:49 +0000 UTC]

That's exactly how I do it (although I find Kerkythea to be slow and frustrating to work with). Β

I've been told from time to time that Sketchup isn't a 'real' modeling program. Β A lot of modeling resource websites don't even mention it. Β I might just point these people to your work. Β

I just looked at some of your stuff, the renderings indeed look nice! Kerkythea probably isn't the fastest and can't handle very high Polygon-count on a single model (I think 10Mio. per model was the limit I've reached). But try the beta 64bit version and always set the number of threads used to 4, because if you don't it will only use 1. This and some other tips can make the rendering time much faster!

And I'm afraid they are in fact right. SketchUp is indeed very limited in comparison to "actual" 3d programs like Blender and Maya. But don't let yourself be discouraged, you can still get a lot out of it!
And feel free to show them my work, would love to hear what they say afterwards

WideFoot In reply to LordDoomhammer [2015-05-15 19:53:00 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I know they're right. Β The base program of sketchup is pitiful. Β It was designed to make basic block sketches of buildings for Google Earth Β So, if it isn't a rectangle, Sketchup gets scared. Β

I run with a bunch of ruby plugins now including Tools on Surface, Curviloft, and others that make the program actually useful. Β I'm seriously considering buying the Artisan plugin, which would allow me to make organic shapes with basic blocking and automatic poly-generation. Β

But, at that point, I'd basically have a buggy version of Blender that can't render anything. Β

I think part of the reason I like Sketchup so much is that modeling things in this program provides a technical challenge that Blender and Maya erase. Β If I could output high-quality renders without so much difficulty, It would be much more enjoyable. Β

My apologies, I seem to have misunderstood you there!

But I see now where you're getting at and I guess you're right. A challenge is a kind of thing, the limitations mean you have to push yourself even more! Sometime I wanna change to Blender to increase the limit even more, but until then I'll get as much out of this little program as I possible can
