and you're right, it is a javelin, but he's stabbing someone with it so idunno, i guess it works like that too

Actually yes, the pilum was used as a useful stabbing weapon, and often the legionnaire didn't resort to throwing it aside from pitched battle, either at a charging foe, or during a charge right before impact. Afterwards they would fight with their gladius, a shortsword carried by most legionnaires. But, nerdgasm aside, yes, it was used as a spear as well often enough.

I thought the pilum was made of a soft lead of some sort, so it bent on impact. Sure it would give the stabbee a whole lot more problems to think about, but the spear is kinda useless at that point.
