yes, good thing about the big flashes is that they have their own zoom, so they can either spread teh light over a wide area or concentrate it in one point

I have come back to admire this picture I should have added it to my feature!!!

Question, how did you get it to stand out so much? + the black backround?

hmmm ...some luck and a lot of playing around i guess ...haha no well, it is some time now that i took that one

if i remember well, it should have to do with the lense i used ...actually it is no standart photolens but an russian MTO 1000mm military mirrortelescope i got very cheap on ebay 3 years ago modified by me to act as a fixed focal length lens of 1500mm (3000mm with a 2x converter ...the same one i used to do the closeups of the moon) on my d300 and having a fixed aperture size of around f11 ...
the photo was taken during the day, but the lens has a strange response to brightness levels and colors ...so darker parts tend to be drowned to black ...water in the pond was really dark...

i would not recommend using it as an everyday lens as it is reaaaaaaaaaally sensitive to any vibration and quite dark due to the aperture size ...even though you can read the immatriculation number on a car 1km away it has the disadvantage that the closest subject you can focus on is about 20m away (8 by using spacer rings between the camera and the lens, but this degrades quality some and light level too)
it really is just an interesting and cheap toy (as lenses at that focal length normally cost thousands)

i guess the same results would be possible in software with photoshop by adjusting black levels and curves by pushing shadows and highlights

haha

eh sorry ...i just wrote a heap of nonsense as i have another pic titled 'shining in the darkness' too, and was wndering if you really meant that one ...
well i did that one with my old d70 and the MTO just like i described
the new one was shot on my D300, using a standart Sigma 70-200 Apo DG HSM II Lens (which by the way is not that bad considering it costs a third of what the same type of lense costs when you buy an orginal nikon one) ...and a 2x sigma converter made for that lense (which brings it to 600mm due to the 1.5 crop factor of the DX sensor in the D300 ...haha sorry ... 200 x1.5 x2 )
I do most of my closeup zoom shots or macro shots with it ...it is not the best, but still better then what most people got :S ...(yeah i should be ashamed)

eh well now to the part how i made it, this one was shot during the day/evening too ...can't quite remember the settings but i used manual control of shutter and aperture size (around f11 to get some more depth of field and a rather quick shutter speed to make the surrounding darker by letting less light enter) ...to illuminate the waterlily i used a Nikon SB800 Speedlight which i borrowed from a friend ...it is a zoom flash, so you can conrtol how wide or narrow the light coming out of the flash will be ...so i tried concentrating most of the light on the flower it self by using masimum zoom and some improvied screening ...
eh yes and to pronounce the colors i used an orange tinted filte rfor the flash , which i corrected later by doing manual white balance, which strangely brought out the blue hues more ...haha ...yehah
a bt comlicated ...i did about 20 different shots ...
later in photoshop^i did what i said before ...upped the black levels some and that was about it

lol ...you haven't seen it yet so... and to be honest it really is the garden of my parents but well ...buying houses with garden here in luxemburg is nearly impossible if you don't have won in the lottery or earn a lot or happen to have a terrain to build on somewhere in your family which won't cost you an arm and a leg ...it really is frustrating :'(

I just love flowers xD

We've got the same problem here..
But we have to move soon and my mom found a little house with a little garden
And we there's a park in front of the new house, so that's pretty awesome xD
