The softening effect is brilliantly used in this work as well as others from you. IMHO.

Thank you so much - I didn't want the contrast to be too high, nor did I want the clocks to burn off your retinas and cause damage!
I think the softening brings more focus towards the centre, where the cogwheels are really turning, guess I wanted to give off a sense of motion.
