Before Denmark unified, Norway unified and Sweden consolidated, Scandinavia was littered with petty kingdoms and republics speaking vaguely the same language, but with vastly different dialects. They were able to undestand eacother most of the time, so if a bunch of kingdoms wanted to unify to create an actual country, they just had to convince, or conquer surrounding kingdoms to join. When Norway unified and Sweden condolidated, the republic of Jämtland was cought in the middle of Norway and Sweden. They wanted to remain independant, but then Norway annaxed them, then Sweden fought Norway and annaxed Jämtland from them. Then they had a few battles for Jemtland here and there.

Jämtland isn't that important for Norway and Sweden to fight for anymore, but the history still stands.
