Description Goddess of Women, Marriage, Family and the Queen of Olympus, she is also the worst stepmother you could ask for - although on the other hand, she also has the worst husband you could ask for. Marrying Zeus and becoming the Goddess of Marriage, ironically Hera possesses a terrible one herself as the story of Zeus' infidelity is an epic unto itself, this would make Hera a sympathetic figure if not for the fact she seems utterly dedicated to taking her anger out on the women (whether they were knowing or not, or even consented) and the bastard children of these affairs. Almost all stories involving Hera focus on her bitterness and wrath, even future Olympians like a young Artemis, Apollo and Dionysus were victims of Hera's abuse. Even Zeus is afraid of confronting an angry Hera head-on, so basically - don't mess with this bitch.

She does, however, have a soft spot for animals particularly birds. In the beginning she originally refused Zeus' marriage proposal, he then turned himself into an injured cuckoo to gain her pity and as she nurtured it in her arms he suddenly he turned back mounting her until he got what he wanted - her hand in marriage. When her loyal servant Argus Panoptes the giant with a hundred eyes was decapitated by Hermes on behalf of Zeus (long story, poor guy was just another innocent caught up in Zeus' endless list of affairs and Hera's endless war against them) Hera immortalized Argus by transforming his eyes into the spots on the tail of her favourite animal and most recognizable symbol, the peacock.

Her symbols are the scepter and the throne and her sacred animals are the peacock and the cuckoo.
