She was jealous. All of the other wynglings seemed to have fancy trinkets when she went into the Nook, little items that made them more beautiful. And she wasn't having it! She was the best - that's why her parents wanted to keep her and raise her and give her everything her little heart desired. So when she sidled up to her mother one evening while she was baking, shyly digging her toes into the floorboards, she knew her request to go into town would be answered.

"D-do you think other wynglings are prettier than I am?" she asked her mother in the tiniest, meekest voice she could handle, then waited for the sounds of kneading dough to stop as her mother looked down at her.

"Well, of course not, pumpkin! You're the prettiest wyngling I've ever seen," her mother cooed, washing off her large forepaws so she could pick Effie up. Inside, Effie was grinning, knowing she'd already won this. "Why, sweetpea? What's wrong?"

Effie's head dipped down, her ears drooping. "Everybody else has a pretty thing to wear when I go to the Nook, and sometimes they pick on me for not having a pretty thing...."

"Well, we can fix that! I had to go into town tomorrow to get some more sugar anyway, so you can come with me and we can get you something pretty to wear. But remember, what you wear doesn't make you pretty - you're beautiful all on your own, inside and out. Now, go tell your papa I need his help with the stove if he wants supper in the next hour. We ran out of matches yesterday, and I need him to light it." She set Effloresce gently on the ground again, and the gray wyngling looked up at her mother with a giant, beaming grin.

"Yes, mama!" Then she skittered off to find her papa, knowing that while she was good, her mother would never suspect a thing about what just happened. Sure enough, the next day when they went into town, Effie got to pick out a pretty, shiny pink bow, and her mother gushed over how cute she looked in it the whole rest of the way to the Nook for school. Not that Effie didn't already know it.

All of the babies (except tab, she comes later) get upgrades!
