Description Toxy held up his claws as his glands glowed a bright red. "Here," he instructed as a tiny little flame ignited above his palms, "try touching this. One finger only, and just focus on not getting burned. That should be alright, and if it's just one finger, even if you do get hurt I can just fix you up right away with light magic."

Tabbris looked uncertainly at the fire, though Melody seemed eager. "You got this, Tabbris! Toxy wouldn't do anything that would get you seriously hurt."

Of course Tabbris was skeptical. Fire hurt. Fire burned. It destroyed, took away, killed, maimed, drove out, choked. It wasn't an element to be taken lightly, no way. But she'd come this far and gotten help from both of these gros, one of which was almost a complete stranger to her, so she couldn't back down now. To gain a complete understanding of magic one day, she needed the experience of taming fire, too.

Her hand shook as she reached out towards the little flame. The closer she got the more anxious she was, until eventually she had to look away, like how it made some people feel better to get a shot if they didn't see the needle. She could still feel it though, the heat coming from the small, flickering source, and it was like she could see it on the back of her eyelids, growing hotter, brighter, whiter, closer and closer to catching up to her, consuming her -

"I can't!" she exclaimed, yelping as she snatched her hand back just before her clawtip came close enough to touch the flame. She cradled her hand against her chest, trying to steady her breathing and the wild pounding of her heart. "I... I can't, yet. I want to feel like I have a better handle on it before I try. I.... If I feel more in control, then I'll definitely be able to do it. Definitely."

Melody and Toxy exchanged a look at the extreme way that Tabbris had reacted, but neither said anything about it. Instead, Melody said, "That's okay, Tabbris. We can practice together another day, once we start getting the hang of things better.

The words only soothed her so much. She felt humiliated, like she'd just made a giant fool of herself, and in her mind she had. It wasn't even just Melody and Toxy who had seen and heard; there were others around them, milling about the town square, talking to each other or sitting on the shrine steps. One green wyngling had been watching in awe, but had left to join her friend quickly when Tabbris failed to complete the magic.

"I'm... gonna go home for the day," Tabbris said, standing up. "Thanks, Toxy, for all your help, and Melody, thanks for introducing us." She gave Melody a little wave and tried to smile as genuinely as she could for both of them, then turned around and hurried to walk away.

She forgot to even set up another time to meet with Melody, and she had little hope that Melody would seek her out after this, even if Tabbris had told her about the book store that she owned, or that she lived near the lake. She just had nothing to offer Melody in the way of assistance in magic, especially when she knew someone who so obviously knew what he was doing. Tabbris was just being stupid and engaging in wishful thinking about things that were not going to happen, not in this lifetime.
