Wow- ive always found colored pencil to be very frustrating, and I've never been completely satisfied with the saturation, but you have totally mastered the medium! Β How big is it? The metal, the highlights, the dark overlaps- just so well done! this really inspires me to go do some colored pencils since its been so long... Β

I have a 24 set of prismacolor pencils, but i haven't done much with them outside of my studio art class. There was one that i was really happy with how it turned out; it was a bison, but it was really colorful, which made it fun. But unfortunately, i gave it to my uncleΒ who lives in Santa Fe, so guess i won't be getting it back any time soon.Β Ugh, I've given away so much of my art, I'm just punching myself for not getting a picture of it first! Aha, oh well, I never thought I'd regret being generous... But seeing colored pencil done right just makes me wanna do more!Β Β
I think the layers is probably the key... i wanna try the stuff you used for the highlights
Thank you!Β Β (bcuz yur elsa and im kinda like anna)

P.S....maybe try smooth finish Bristol if you find the sketch paper too rough. I swear by it for colored pencils.

Great colors on this. Hard to believe it's out of your comfort zone. Love the transition from the reds to the cool blues at the top. Really good stuff. I have to try the white gel pen. Anything I've tried for white highlights doesn't take to the Prismas well.
I also loved your profile pic. I love seeing other artists in their studios. You seem very organized!!!!
Keep up the great work!!!!
Have fun!

Thank you
Yeah, this was really out of mt comfort zone; of all the coloured pencil pictures I've drawn, I've never done something this "solid" in colour. My other portraits have a lot of white in them.
Yeah, the white pen is good, I use a Pentel 1mm. However, it doesn't come out white on really vibrant colours; you might be able to see that on the top of Iron Man's head, it's a slight pinky/purple hue. I normally also use Dr. Ph. Martin's bleed proof white; it's really opaque, so nothing will get through it! I just forgot to use it this time! Prisma's are very creamy, aren't they?
Ah, I also always use smooth bristol board. This time though, I thought I'd try a rougher paper, because I thought I'd be able to build up more layers for a more vibrant colour. Usually, with the bristol board, I can't build up as much layers (but that could be due to the way I colour!) I usually don't need to use that many layers anyway, so it's never been a problem.
You know, my studio has changed 3 times since that picture! I'm living in a completely different country now! So, yes, I have to be very organised

Yeah...I know about opaque white. I've tried just about everything. It covers great but it's a little too thick for me and if I water it down to a better consistency I find it loses too much opacity. I'm also much more comfortable with a pen than a brush. I am gonna try the gel pen which I'm pretty sure I've tried way way back in the past but I'm not 100% sure so I'll give it another shot. I know I've given paint markers a look but had the same problem you described. Plus I do alot of straight graphite stuff and surprisingly they don't go over the graphite well at all. Most of the time I just scan the piece and add only the whitest 100% whites with Photoshop. Like eye reflections for example. Quick, painless and most of all effective. Especially with the graphite stuff cuz that graphite just gets all over the place no matter how careful you are. The only way to keep the paper 100% clean thru the whole process is liquid mask and that's just too much trouble.
And I won't use anything but Prismas except for black I use Faber Castel cuz I find the harder points stay sharp and intact longer. Nothing else lays down the color to get that painterly look like the Prismacolors for me.
You might already know this but in case you don't......The reason successive layers don't adhere as well is cuz of wax buildup from the colored pencils. Of course light layers lay down less wax and are the way to go but you can also rub some tissue paper over the color to remove some of the excess wax from the top every so often. It's not a magic cure but helps.
I love your fb cover photo by the way. Keep up the great work. You really are good. And I can tell you love the process which is something I love to see.
It was great talking art with you Lorna. It's one of my favorite things about this awesome community here is when I run into someone who is passionate enough to take a minute to talk about this whole art thing of ours.
If you don't mind me asking what country did you move from and too? it's not everyday someone moves to another country!
Warm regards,
Rob

I'm not that great with a brush, to be honest; I don't feel like I have as much control, which then leads to nervousness and makes my hand shakier, haha. There is one other problem with the gel pen I have found; the rollerball part can cause a scraping effect in the middle of the line (again, maybe I'm too heavy handed?), so I usually have to lightly layer the ink. I look forward to the day when a miracle traditional highlighting tool is made! You know, I've never really thought of using photoshop to add some whites. Sure, I use it to try and balance out the colour to something a little more accurate for uploading. I think I try and do my best to get some whites in traditionally, as I usually display my originals (or it's commissioned); the option of photoshop is never really there Hey, you're talking to a leftie here. Graphite and mess go hand in hand. My only saving grace is using a piece of paper to rest on, and even then I have to be careful not to slide it. Thinking about it now, art can sometimes be a nerve-wracking experience. ha.
I'm probably not as experienced when it comes to coloured pencils, so I'm still learning. Thank you for your advice! I did actually use tissue for some parts of this picture; it was initially to help smudge and ease blending, but I realised how much easier it was to lay down colour afterwards. It's really exciting when you discover a new technique! I do really love Prismacolors, but do you find they just break really easily? I'm hoping I don't have a dud set that were damaged, but they really are very soft, and I have trouble sharpening them without the lead always breaking. Any advice? The Polychromos are a little more durable, and like you say; easier to sharpen to a fine point. I actually quite like the feel of them too. I haven't tried every kind of pencil out there, so I feel like I'll never know what is the perfect pencil for me! I might get a tester Derwent set next.
I like talking art. I love getting advice and tips, and then it's such a boost when someone asks me for advice. I could also spend hours just watching videos of people drawing; that's helped me a lot, especially when it comes to using markers. There's not too many people I can talk to about it passionately in "real life"; so I'm thankful for places like this.
My moving patterns are all over the place! I'm Irish, but I lived in England for 12 years as a child, then we returned to Ireland. 4 years ago I moved to Australia; I moved back to Ireland about 2 months ago. My parents were kind enough to set up a little room for me in their studios (my mum is a tattooist), so I'll see how that goes for a while. Are you a tattooist, or do you only design tattoos for people?
