so uh...some things happened between Twilight and Discord right around the time Discord left his family. sorry, this fic is super rough ^^" Think of it more as a concept than as true canon. I mean, it's canon that they started having confused feelings for each other, but, yeah I'm prolly over explaining lol

Twilight set down the book and rubbed her stinging eyes. She took another swig of Applejack's alcoholic cider, feeling a headache coming on. It took her a moment to realize that Celestia's sun was shining on her face.

"Day three." Said Discord, who stared blankly at an old tome. "It's been three days of nothing but research...I'm starting to have my doubts this is even possible."

Twilight folded her ears back, looking across her library at the draconequus. "I'm sorry Discord...I really thought we were onto something with that Flamel Spell..."

"This simply isn't fair. Magic is supposed to be able to do anything! My magic can do anything! Except...this. Why?" He covered his eyes in despair, hunching over.

"I'm so sorry..." She tiredly walked over to him, placing a comforting wing on his shoulder.

"I don't know how much more of this I can take..." Discord wasn't sure what it was. Maybe the exhaustion of researching for literal days, or the fear and loneliness. He felt himself running his paw over her wing, "Thank you, Twilight. Even if this is fruitless, I appreciate everything you've done for me...next to Fluttershy...in another lifetime maybe...I think I may be feeling...rather close to you."

"You're not making sense, Discord." Princess Twilight said, her mind hazy.

"Nothing is making any sense." Discord pressed his muzzle to hers seeking comfort, his eyes closed.

Twilight didn't stop him or say no. She mostly felt horribly sorry for the draconequus. She wanted to help. She wanted to show him that this wasn't hopeless. They had grown so close over the years, with Discord relying solely on her for comfort. His happiness started to mean more and more to her. Somehow, she found herself kissing him back.

The kiss lasted far too long. And it didn't stop when Discord ran his tongue over her lips. Or when his paw and claw found themselves around her sides. Twilight used her wing to hold his face in place.

She pulled away, feeling the world spin around her, "What are we doing?"

"I don't care anymore...nothing matters..." Discord pressed himself back into the kiss and begged against her. "Just please..." Discord didn't know what he was asking for. He loved his son. He loved his wife. And yet, being around Fluttershy and his little son only made him feel worse now. For many years, Twilight had become a comfort to Discord. They understood each other, she had been working so hard for him, and she was an excellent distraction from the existential horror his family had become. Yet...hadn't Discord wanted a family? Didn't he realize that their deaths were inevitable? How had he not come to terms with this? It was the simple reality of things, unbiased. Even Twilight wasn't immortal like him. And yet, it all hurt, so, so, so much. It was all too easy for him to pretend, even for just a moment, that he hadn't made a horrible mistake in falling in love with Fluttershy...and poor Twilight would suffer for it too.
