Earth pony just means that they are "normal" non-magical, non-pegasi, non-unicorn, etc ponies. No wings or magic, just stuck on the ground. Unicorn type tails aren't stuck solely with unicorns
She is not part of any species, just a normal pony

Well, there is not one traditional design. This one is more inspired by a lion. In my region, there a lampposts of unipegs with a snake's tail. These are quite old as well.
