I actually did buy purple facepaint... there's a theatre store nearby where I live, so I managed to find purple.
But the only reason it was so clean-looking was because I used purple eyeliner to outline where the facepaint went, i.e., Kankuro's design, first. Then I used a small, flat paintbrush to put the facepaint on.
