Kaoru missed Kenshin terribly.  Ever since he’d left for the war, she hadn’t stopped thinking about him.  Her son wouldn’t admit it, but he missed his father as well.

She remembered when she’d met Kenshin.  The man had been a traveling swordsman at the time and she’d thought, quite accurately, that he was the Battousai.  He’d denied it and acted like the oaf he really was.  She remembered that she’d gotten in trouble and he’d saved her, ultimately admitting to the fact that he was the real Battousai and that the impostor was nothing like him.

Then they’d met that little boy, the one that picked Kenshin’s pocket.  The redheaded man had pretended not to notice and they’d eventually ended up saving that kid as well.  It had been a while since Kaoru had seen him, and she had forgotten his name.  It had something to do with the growing senility.  Kaoru was getting old.  Ah, yes. Yahiko.  That was it!

Then there was that fighter for hire that had wanted to defeat Kenshin in a duel.  He’d lost, of course, and joined their growing party of friends.  Life had been a bit tame for a while.  The occasional skirmish in which Kenshin was always involved would break out, but they were happy.  And Kaoru was falling in love.

She hadn’t known what to do about her feelings for Kenshin.  Every time he fought, she found herself worrying about his safety, and denying her growing feelings for the redheaded samurai.  Then that one day, so many years after they’d met.

“Kaoru.  I’ve been in love with you for some time.  I would die for you, that I would.  Would you become my wife?”

She’d nearly fainted as the words left his lips.  She’d sobbed continuously for a little over an hour, not believing her own ears.  It had been like a dream come true for her and she’d accepted his proposal.  She’d said yes.

“Kami, Kenshin!  Hai!  I will!”

Even after hearing about the woman who’d captured his heart, betrayed him, then sacrificed her life to correct her mistakes, Kaoru had married him.

They’d gone to a little island just off the Japanese coast for their honeymoon, conceiving Kenji on a beautiful, heart-felt night.  There had been flowers, roses, candlelight, and a hot spring.  They had made passionate love in the hot spring, then again in the suite.

Things were so happy with him.  Then he’d gone and died in the war.  Perhaps it was time for Kaoru to move on, but she didn’t want to.  She would always, no matter what, love Himura Kenshin.
