"So there was my friend Kerstin, leaning against the building on the corner of Sixth and Figueroa. She’d planted both her feet on the other side of Sixth, so she wasn’t blocking any traffic. About a minute earlier, I’d seen her take a heavy suitcase from a man. That was in her closed fist, so there was no way to see it. I couldn’t see the man, either, because he was now behind the bank building. But she was pointing a finger at him and laughing. The windows of the conference room where I stood made it impossible to make out what she was saying.

"After I went home and had supper, I called her to ask about what had happened."

"'Oh, nothing earth-shaking,' she answered. 'Joey’s just mad because the Browns decided to play Monday Night Rugby last night instead of Monday Night Football. Which means he lost the bet, and I won his $2,200 stereo speakers. Finally, I’ll have a decent set of earbuds!'"
