Description December 2011

A new self portrait. Enjoy! (or not) Drawn from a photo reference.

Technical stuff: mechanical pencils 0.5 & 0.7. About the size of an A4, 21x30 cm (8,4x12 in). Plus a bit of digital restauration (‘cause my scanner is hell bent on totally destroying the gentlest shadings in the background). About 32 hours total.

Well... that particular geek is slowly collecting years, it's been up since 2011. But then again, the real geek is collecting years as well.

Anyways... glad you enjoyed the gallery and the DD. There will be more crazyness and geekiness to come soon enough.
(Thank you, Ken)

Stort tack.

Never fear my talented queen is here!!!
Your talent is remarkable, so naturally I don't need to repeat it every single time,
and your obsession for details is immense, but we know that too.
Let's just leave it at the fact that because of you I now have to clean my computer screen
from pieces of my brain that had exploded recently because of this piece

Oh, brain substance of all things! That is so darned hard to get rid of. I've yet to find a really good spot-remover for grey matter.

I believe 'No words necessary' would be the apropriate term.
Thank you.

Good on you! That was a whole day wasted on household chores instead of art You should have let it dry and flake off by itself.

Well, can you draw hyper-detailed pencil portraits or what! Yes, you definitely can! We know that when you draw, something like this can be expected but still this one has amazing amount of details. And especially so with those glasses, hair and sleeve decorations.

A stunning work Louise.

Loulin In reply to DeepWoodian [2011-12-06 08:29:37 +0000 UTC]

Tank you thank you Drawing with pencils is one thing, drawing from a photo-reference is another. Kind of like turning the whole thing up a notch or two.

Ugh... The sleeve decoration nearly killed me. It's still not accurate; the stitchings, some kind of floral decoration, is a lot more complicated than what I've managed. Still... no hard feelings toward my favourite fleece hoodie.

DeepWoodian In reply to Loulin [2011-12-06 09:07:35 +0000 UTC]

I'll bet. I have done that very rarely (drawing from photos that is) and those attempts can't be compared to this at any level.

I myself have noticed that whenever I try to draw some decorations to the clothes (or armors) they seem to be really hard to get to look right. Especially so if the patterns are not symmetrical.

Loulin In reply to DeepWoodian [2011-12-06 09:41:02 +0000 UTC]

I find drawing from a photo both challenging and slightly boring, which is why I don't do it very often. But it's a nice break from everything else.

And decorations are hard, I agree. When it comes to man-made patterns I usually draw blank. But when all is said and done I think I'd prefer non-symmetrical patterns rather than symmetrical. That way you have more leeway if things aren't going exactly the way you want.
