Description Here it is, my entry for the WoW contest Galder is hosting: Second Brigade Contest

My illustration depicts two children of cenarius, the dryads Aeon and Aela. The young and unexperienced Aela unfortunately got corrupted by the curse of Emerald Nightmare. Aeon, her friend and an experienced healer, helps Aela to recover with the aid of her powerful pendant, The Essence of Nature .

It is definitely the most complex artwork I ever made and I threw everything into this I have learend so far: characters, scenery, lighting, story, perspective
I still feel there is something wrong about it but I cant tell what it is, so I'll be happy if you have any feedback
Nevertheless I decided to submit it now and move on. Thanks to Galder for holding this contest and answering all my questions about dryads

Holy cow this must have taken forever! It looks amazing, all that practice has definitely led somewhere I love the storytelling and the whole image is really damn powerful!

Though I agree that there is something that might look a little off... what I think the strong foreshortening might not really fit with the rest of the image... Did you try to map out the perspective? everything else is spot on though and this doesn't take away from the image! ^^

Ha, it did indeed take forever   Thanks for your comment! And for your help in finding the mistake, I think you might have gotten it.. although I still cant say how it should look like.. I havent tried something with perspective maps, just pushed everything around until it seemed okay

Okay I hope you don't mind me nitpicking! I actually became curious as to how the perspective should have worked and tried to map it out a little, and I think the biggest issue is that the hand is on a completely different perspective that the rest of the image. If you try to act the pose that the character has, you'll notice that her hand isn't actually physically as high as the perspective makes it seem to be, it's just a teeny bit higher than her head actually. You'd need a really strong 3-point perspective for the rest of the image to fit with how it should. At least that's what I think.

I tried to illustrate my point here, I hope it's understandable ^^'

Hey, great, thanks for the try to find out what's wrong
But I don't think it is so easy/that the hand is the (only) problem. I checked my sketches again and I think the problem is the perspective of the healer and the wounded one is a bit different and the background doesn't really fit to either. Plus the head of the healer is too small regarding her perspective, maybe that's why the hand looks weird. At least that last point is for sure because I took a reference photo of myself for the hand/arm/head/torso and used it for the sketch. Later I decided to make her head smaller because it looked too big compared to the perspective of rest of the image ^^
So overall I think its a big mess regarding the perspective part but hopefully people will miss that out because they are blinded by the many colors and details

Gosh I'm so sorry for replying this late ;___;

Honestly I wanted to try and see if I have any eye at spotting what could help I hope you didn't take it personally, it was a really interesting exercise! I for sure am not saying that I am by any means correct ^^ and you are absolutely correct, there is so much detail anyway that it doesn't really matter in the end!

ToxicSnakeSkull [2019-02-07 20:06:43 +0000 UTC]

Damn, you may not be - as you described it - an allround creative, and that your ideas are visual in the first place... but by the Maker the power your arts have to tell a story! I mean, technically it's Galder's story in a sense but that's not the point

You can practically see and sense the division/barrier between life and death in both the environment + the different states of Aeon and Aela (funny as well how the two trees at the very edges of the 'canvas' have their heavily shadowed sides facing the corruption end   ). Notice as well how the greenery and forest dominates the piece. I know the obvious explanation is that they're in a forest, but on the otherhand it makes one feel that Aeon has begun to pull Aela back from the brink of death. Alternatively, it really adds some serious depth to an idea once stated by Poison Ivy in one of the Batman: Arkham games: "Nature always wins".

Also I love that there's a reference to 'The Essence of Nature'. That's one of my personal favourite Galder pieces.

Good luck in the contest

Thanks again for your detailed critique   you recognize even details I didn't plan because they happened intuitively
Oh and that's what I meant, I need some input then I can visualize quite detailed stories - and Galder gave me a looot of input so this is maybe a little overdone because I could not stop
I'm happy you are seeing my main point - that nature is the most powerful force and Aeon will succeed in saving Aela

Thank you! I'm not so into the stories inside WoW but Galder explained to me, Aela could recover from the corruption with the help of her friends so in my version Aeon is the friend healing her - not completely but Aela is doing okay again

This is a wonderful piece of art Stefanie! I admire the composition, the general idea of nature versus corruption, the emotion this particular scene evokes. You have done wonderful work with the background and the characters themselves. And of course the Essence of nature is spot on. Welcome aboard and good luck in the contest!

Oh wow!!! This is impressive on so many levels!
The composition is incredible and you chose a risky perspective! My favorite part has to be the choice of colors and the way it flows from a bright and green environment to a dark and reddish one, feeling absolutely organic.

Best luck on the contest! You made such a stunning work!
