Description Featured on EQD!

This one's a birthday present for my friend DrDicksAmazingStick !  She's been really into Fallout lately, and I wanted to do something with that beautiful rose-butt mare of hers. Thus, this was the result.
(I did give it to her on her actual b-day, I just haven't gotten around to the official upload until now. Whoopsie.)

Full disclaimer: I have never played Fallout, never read Fallout Equestria (though I have plans to do both), and I don't know much about weaponry, etc etc. I apologize for any inaccuracies there may be. I hope it still makes for a nice scene!

I'm actually really proud of this one. There were a lot of firsts for me: first time doing an entire scenebuild myself, first time getting volumetrics to actually work, first time using material overrides that got used in the final image, first time using animation for motion blur, first time rendering in 4k (which my new computer handled like a beast), and first time doing more in-depth cleanup and edits with post-processing in Photoshop.

I feel like this represents a bit step for me. I learn new things and make great strides with every piece I create. That process is a big part of why I love doing what I do.
Another part of it is making other people happy.

You've been an amazing, supportive friend, M. This one's for you.

What is that grenade? I see no pin in it and yet the safety lever is still on it.

love-mist In reply to Siboein-Koughn [2016-06-23 07:47:30 +0000 UTC]

Lol, that would be a combination of two things.

1) I evidently don't know how grenades work. XP It wasn't until later that I realized that wasn't particularly accurate.

2) I didn't have a lot of flexibility with that prop. I think that grenade came from the Day of Defeat content pack. It doesn't have any posable parts, but I liked it better than the TF2 grenade, even though the enhanced TF2 grenade is fully posable with removable pieces.
So all I did was rotate the grenade to hide the pin behind it. I couldn't get an angle that hid the pin AND the whole lever. Then I borrowed the pin from the TF2 grenade for Dixie to hold.

Artistic goals won over technical accuracy. ^~^;

1) Ok
2) I don't know what you mean by prop, and don't understand the process your talking about so is this some kind of screen shot?

This is a scene put together with 3D models in a 3D animation program called Source Filmmaker.

Ok, I see what it is, very fascinating, an object simulator as I would call it.

Anyhow that is all I desired to know, thank you for you're time, and for answering my questions so politely.

Where did you get the scarf?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

love-mist In reply to Cursed-Grimdark [2016-04-14 07:40:29 +0000 UTC]

It's actually a TF2 item! So you can find it in the default SFM assets. It's called the Merc's Muffler, but I think the model name has 'scarf' in it if you're searching for it.
wiki.teamfortress.com/wiki/Mer…
Fun tidbit: since it's a multi-class item, there are actually multiple models of it with slightly different shaping to fit all 9 mercs. So you can play around with which works best for you. (Couldn't tell you off the top of my head which I went with, but I could check.)

If I recall correctly, the safety lever (the big curved lever that runs down the side of the grenade) is supposed to come off once the pin is removed and the grenade is thrown, but other than that everything seems to be in order lol. Regardless, really nice work, the editing is beautiful on this one, and I like that VERY slight DoF.

love-mist In reply to wiseman454 [2016-03-02 22:42:11 +0000 UTC]

Hence the disclaimer.

Actually, that part in particular was something tristienm pointed out as I was working on it. Which I didn't know, I figured the lever just popped up, not off! So I've learned something new.

In the end though, the fact was that that particular grenade model didn't have any movable parts. The pin is actually still in it, while the pin in her mouth is borrowed from the enhanced TF2 grenade. I could rotate it to hide the pin, or hide the lever, but not both (unless it was at a really bizarre angle).

But I liked how that grenade looked so much better than the TF2 one. Sooo I sacrificed a little bit of accuracy for it.

I'm glad you like it!

Honestly, I don't know off the top of my head EXACTLY how the lever works, so you could actually be right there XD

love-mist In reply to wiseman454 [2016-03-03 03:22:45 +0000 UTC]

Nah, looks like you guys are right. Maybe it varies among some specific grenade types, but in general it looks like it flies off.

I'm just very confused. It always seemed like a hinged lever thing, so I assumed that's how it worked. Strange design if you ask me!

wiseman454 In reply to love-mist [2016-03-03 03:28:18 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, but the idea is that as long as that lever is held down, you can always change your mind/delay the throw without risking blowing yourself up, but once you actually throw the grenade, the lever flies off, and now the grenade can't be disarmed anymore. That does sound dangerous, but I guess the idea there is that whoever is on the receiving end can't disarm it or use it against you.

Weapons are weird.
