I heard before the original DK game's release Shigeru Miyamoto (Mario & DK's creator) considering calling him "Mr. Video."
Then he became "Jumpman" in the DK game, and then he became known as "Mario" in the release of "Donkey Kong Jr."

More specifically, Pauline is from the very first Donkey Kong game, and has made recent appearences in the Mario VS. Donkey Kong series. In all her appearences, she plays the role of damsel in distress.
