Warning? Warning! You don't need no stinking warning!!! Seriously, it stands on it's own merit - Fear No Art.

Oops - sorry. My bad. Still I don't see how somethings as innocuous as that series of nudes could be thought of as brain warping material. Must be a Red State thing....

It has nothing to do with "brain warping." Some youngsters are not prepared for some artistic nude materials, particularly fetish images. They do not have the schema to understand much less to appreciate them.

Oh I understand - it's just that I'm not a fan of having to ask permission or indulge in censorship simply because our society is so repressed that many parents refuse, or are embarrassed or ashamed to talk about such things with their children. Explicit themes of say, oral sex, are another matter, but the rank and file nudes shouldn't even be an issue. Or perhaps it's MY issue because I've had work tossed out of juried shows one or two times too many. Hmmm?

Ok... I'm going to risk sounding prude here, but - trust me - I am not a prude...
Did you try to enter work that did not fit the guidelines of the show? As a parent, an artist, and a model, I appreciate ratings and filters. No, I do not believe in censorship, but I think the Mature Content filters and guidelines for public showings are perfectly appropriate. Such systems filter nude and fetish work away from those who do not wish to see such images and from those who, according to the law, should not view such work. Why force artistic nudes upon someone who doesn't want to see them or have the website/gallery/group shut down for providing illicit content to minors?
I could easily show you a dozen DA images I would have no problem with my own underage children seeing. But I could probably more easily show you a dozen I think would make them uncomfortable or even frighten them. I feel it is my responsibility to help themgrow up with a healthy attitude towards their bodies and their sexuality. And that is not being repressed or embarrassed or ashamed. It is being responsible.
In a society where some children are exposed to abuse and sex and violence and drugs on a daily basis, I guess the government does its best to regulate without censoring. I'm not always happy with the regulations, but...

Of course I did, as I understand them - the guidelines state that no pornographic images will be allowed - I agree with that, but then the old bugaboo of 'what is pornographic' rears it's ugly head. My rendering of a woman in loose robes with part of her breast exposed and perhaps 1/4 of her nipple exposed doesn't seem at all pornographic to me, but then a work that seems to glorify people being killed in combat, or of combatants and innocents lying dead on the ground is distasteful and pornographic to me.
If parents are going to bring their children to an art exhibit, how can the parents be so naive as to think that Art and Nudes don't go hand in hand? Little Mackenzie and Josh are going to be exposed (no pun intended, really) to at least one partial nude. The parents have to shoulder some of the responsibility here - they should tell the children what to expect to see before they enter the gallery. Better still, go in a day or so before you take the children so you'll be prepared for what's in there. Mature Content filters? Right you are, but those filters should be the parents and not some committee. I don't want to force anyone to see something that they don't want to see, or may not understand, or be disturbed by. I didn't agree with the infamous 'Crucifix' photo by Mapplethorpe, and even thought I'm not a Christian I found it disturbing, but I would never play to the lowest common denominator and hide it away.
I'll just sum it up by saying that when I was teaching school, the parents were loathe to talk to their children about the issues of sex and sexuality. The kids had valid questions, and the first place they SHOULD be able to go for answers would be the parents. However, many of them were dealing in their own shame-based sexually maladjusted issues to ever talk about such things with their teenage children, and we had an outrageously hight dropout rate for pregnancy. I'm just saying that many of us, as parents, have failed to do our jobs in answering questions as soon as they are brought up and asked. Shame on us for our fear and shame.
You DO know that I'm not arguing with you, don't you? I just love a good debate. And I respect your views on this, as well as respecting you as an Artist. But I will allow for a certain degree of naivety' on my part as I have no children - perhaps if I did I would see things differently.
Respectfully yours
David

Well, as I see it we're in complete agreement then; mature content filters are a good and necessary thing, parents should talk openly with their children about issues of sex and sexuality (although we both realize that most either don't know themselves or simply won't). But we who create this work do need protection from, well, everything. Just because we create the stuff doesn't automatically mean we're the arbiters of good taste.
Do you REALLY get notes like that? Oh, well, given the nature of the now infamous 'Shaving' post I suppose you do....Yeewww!
