" Lights Out "
WC: 529.
"Ghos—" Aspen's voice cut off as the young stallion chucked in another buck. It was only their second-ever international event and this time Ghost was determined to put on a show for the people of Delft... It's just not the kind of show Aspen was hoping for. Aspen dearly hoped the folks in the warm-up ring didn't mind the constant dancing, bucking and sudden loud bursts of equine shouting. It didn't help that they were one of the first in the ring either.
"I think you might have to just hold on and hope for the best" Marnie grimaced as Ghost jig jogged sideways towards the entrance of the arena. Even with her gloves on, Aspen could feel her reins beginning to slip from the sweat collecting on his neck.
"I've lost my mind" she muttered back as Marnie gave her an encouraging smile and disappeared into the crowd.
As the announcer introduced them Aspen managed to direct the dancing Ghost Writer to have a look at the KoningsHuys jump which was lit up in golden light and decorated with hanging purple flowers. It was quite the sight for the dithering Ghost who snorted at it before backing off. The clock had already started counting down and Aspen decided it was now or never. She asked him for canter and the stallion burst into an exuberant stride, taking a route down the side of the treble combination before presenting him at the first fence. Ghost shot forward and took off, his tail flick in the air as he took a grip of the bit in his mouth and Aspen did her best to hold on. This wasn't going to be pretty.
They took off after the first like it was the jump-off rather than the first round and Aspen resigned herself to letting the young Zlesdin do it his way. She considered that the more she fought him the more likely it was the round would unravel. It got a bit hairy down to the fourth fence, the very jump she'd shown him earlier, as Ghost took a long look at it whilst drifting sideways.
"Go on Ghost" Aspen encouraged, but they got their stride completely wrong and were far too close to it. To his credit, Ghost threw in an almighty effort to try jump it, but Aspen heard the rattle of a pole as they cantered away, but certainly didn't have the luxury to look behind to see if it was still there. They took a flyer to the next and Aspen tried her best to get him into the corner of the arena, she wasn't much concerned about time, but more of the Australian Warmblood double coming up.
Ghost was having none of it.
He took a stride out to the verticle, accompanied by a colourful range of expletives that fell from Aspen's mouth, as she slipped the reins to try to help the stallion on landing. There was no way of trying to set up for the second part and Aspen hopelessly left it entirely up to her partner.
From the crowd, Marnie watched on open-mouthed, her legs bending with each jump that Ghost made.
