Is grim a state of mind, or something worse? You can never be so sure with stories from non-Earth fictions.

Going grim is something that's specific to Hybrids. It's triggered by intense feelings of pain, fear, anger, despair... It makes them revert back to a primal and bestial state and they turn into a monstrous animal. It's irreversible, so it makes most races cautious of Hybrids, and Hybrids who do dangerous or stressful activities like skyrates often rely on whatever they can use to prevent that state. That's why lemonade is so rampant amongst skyrates, lemonade is basically strong alcohol and it alters the senses, pushing back grim state.
You can tell someone is close to turning grim when their eyes start going red.

Thinking of doing it so his mask changes sides when his mood changes, or something else, but it's on the left when he's chill and happy (aka angel side) and on the right when he's angry, concerned about things (aka demon side)
