Is that a larch tree? If you ever need to sleep out in the woods, look for larches. The thick layer of needles underneath them should not only provide you with a (relatively) soft "mattress", but it should also be 100% tick-free, as opposed to patches of tall grass and, in particular, blueberries (which are like tick hotels). Just so you know

yes, it is a larch tree (lerke). there are quite a few of them in these parts - also in people's yards/gardens.
i don't think i would attempt sleeping in the woods here - it's too soggy for my taste, even in the summer.
i know that there is a particular type of mushroom that grows under such trees (lerkesopp) - so my associations are on the whole positive

What makes a lerkesopp induce positive associations? Does it look happy? According to wikipedia they'r extremely rare here in NL, which might help explain a general sense of unease

it is not the particular type of mushroom. it is a fuzzy positive association from my childhood - from mushroom picking tours with my family.

We used to go pick chanterelles. My memories about it are fairly neutral. I can mostly recall the "elders" complaining about how they would come home with a bucket full within and hour, and now they had to search for hours to find more than a few handfuls. And since back then no one had ever heard of air pollution, eutrophication and acid rain, the blame was simply shoved onto the Germans (they were supposed to rip them out of the ground rather than to cut them off, causing them to no longer grow, which is nonsense, because that isn't how mycelium works)
