Here in Holland autumn seems to be seamlessly merging into spring. But we're by far not out of the danger zone yet, two years ago we had -11 in April.

i've heard that ice scating was popular in holland, when the sea or the lakes froze - or something like that. is it true?

Popular is a gross understatement, it's more like a nation-wide state of near-psychosis. Every time it starts freezing outside people start making preparations for the Elfstedentocht, the Eleven Towns Race, in the North of NL (in Friesland to be precise, a province that is only reluctantly part of The Netherlands because they have their own language and customs and mentality and attitude and all that). It passes through eleven towns indeed and is surrounded by myth of brutal hardship. Unfortunately for the fanatics the weather almost never allows for one to happen any more, for it requires serious frost for at least a week or so, in order for the ice to be thick enough to support a mass of skaters and their fans (and to an ever increasing extent the media). Apart from that Holland is of course one of the greatest skating nations, if not the greatest (as in: one of the very few nations that are interested in ice skating to begin with). "Our" main competitor is Norway, I believe

Once ice skating races from Stavanger to Newcastle will become a yearly event, the alarm bells should start ringing
