Description In the Victorian Era, India was considered the jewel of the English crown. British aristocrats traveled all across the world, bringing back souvenirs of all kinds from every continent. It was extremely fashionable for women to wear exotic clothing from other locales.
I personally think it would be criminal for the genre of steampunk to ignore this aspect of history, especially when we place such an emphasis on the dashing explorer (who, let's remember, could also be an absolute dickwad at many times). This is my interpretation of a lady explorer's outfit when she wants to show off and have her profession and knowledge of world cultures be recognized.
This is also a stretching of the boundaries of what can be called "lolita". In America, the rules for lolita are extremely strict (actually much more so than in Japan, where it originated!); the skirt must be a specific length and shape, the blouses are all neo-victorian, socks are nearly always knee-high with ruffles, mary-janes or boots are prefered for shoes, and arm/leg warmers are generally frowned upon. Belts are rarely seen. Saris are unheard of.
As you can see, I stuck to the basic formula of a lolita outfit- bell skirt + blouse- but I added the armwarmers, sari, belt, and hairstyle, and chose the colors, to harken to the victorian explorer archetype of steampunk.

This is probably my favorite of the designs. I want it!

Textures are mostly from off-DA sites (I tend to use the swatches on fabric sales sites a lot). One is from colourlovers.com, but I don't remember the others.

I'm going to have to give this a go. It's just so cool. Guess that means it's a good thing that I don't follow the rules, if American lolita is so strict.

Oh, please do! It's not that all American lolis are so strict, it's just that the existence of all the bitchy ones creates an atmosphere where people are afraid to experiment. :/ Plus they seem to have a thing against Steampunk? Probably because it's so open-ended and free. XD

Like I said, it's a good thing I don't care much about rules. *sighs* With any luck, I'll have this one done by December. I've got a lot of projects though.

This is so nice to see. My Steampunk character Tanvi "Raj" Sunil is what I consider "Rajpunk" lol.

Steampunkers forget about India and thus miss out on such brilliant textures and colors.

It's nice to see others using that as inspiration as well!

Besides, where do they think the Tea is coming from?! (lol)

Luai-lashire In reply to JasmineLeilani [2010-05-12 17:02:50 +0000 UTC]

Yes indeed! And too often when they do remember it, they approach it in a kind of icky colonialist way. If I were living in a steampunk world, I'd be using my dirigible (and possibly time machine, lol) to travel all over the world and make new friends in every country I could. I love and respect other cultures, and I want that to show through in my vision of steampunk!

Also, tea <3

Here here! I could not have said it better myself.
I've always had a fascination with India (and I study Classical Indian dance) so it was natural for me to go "Hey, were are all the African people and Indian people and all the other countries that the British invaded by the time the Victorian era came around?

My character actually was worked to represent more than just India, I wanted her to represent another truth about Britons conquests.

She's not actually Indian at all (though she was born and raised there, raised to believe she was and considers herself Indian). She's half British and half African.
Countries that invade other people tend to pretend that they don't interbreed.
That creates a whole new angle and element to both cultures.

Add some steam punky-ness to it and you have a cuppa fun!

Mmmm, tea...

That sounds like a really cool backstory! I didn't come up with anything like that for this drawing.... I was just doing a series of fashion sketches and not coming up with characters so much as thinking about steamy archetypes. Some day I think I'd like to actually develop a steampunk persona and cosplay her (or him, or shim! One of the benefits of identifying as ungendered is I have no limits!) but I have yet to do so.

There need to be more non-Europeans in steampunk! I have to admit, I'm kinda disappointed that in a setting where people are traveling all over the globe all the time and our imaginations are the only limit, most people's imaginations stop in Europe. :/

Hopefully those of us with more vivid imaginations like you and me can inspire the masses!

Shim's are great, that's what I do with Rahj. Its fun, especially with my hair so short. It gives people pause, they have to think about it for two seconds. They aren't sure if your a androgynous girl or a pretty boy!
Love it!!!!

It will be up to us to perpetuate the expansion of the Steamy sort. I'm dying to go to a Steampunk or Media Convention where I can cosplay something steamy.

I want to do some cross-play with Raj, do some Rahj-punk indian inspired stuff. I'd like to do some African inspired stuff, some Afro-carribean stuff..
And of course I'm going to dress my son up (luckily he's too young to have a say LOL!).

Do it, cosplay so there are more of us representing!
