Apparently he didn't know you took a picture of him, which in my opinion is not professional.

He wasn't even too happy to know about people using his image for commercial purposes nor just for a turistic ones.

Just to let you know: it would be good costume to ASK before taking pictures of people you do not know.

This goes for every one that doesn't understand how hard it is to keep a unique look despite harassment, laughter at the back and turists eager to take a picture of a punk from London and photographers invading your own privacy of your own day-to-day life.
I understand if you asked him or if you planned WITH him about this pictures, I love it personally but sneaking behind (and I know how it is done) and taking a picture in an EXHIBITION HALL (ah, by the way: were you allowed to take pictures in there?)

I mean, try, for once, to put yourself in our shoes and live your life keeping your own principles of freedom and self expression alive and you find yourself stalked by turists and photographers that think the only way to take a good pic is to use other's people life's because they look "weird".

Or even worst you are stalked by turists that point at you and take pictures of you as you were a rare animal confined in the London Zoo (for us is called Camden Town ah-ah !) and when they go back to their own city then they laugh and take the piss out of those that live the same kind of life, but they are not in London so they are not cool but just some poor anonimous freaks.

and I know very well how Italy is, I left that country at 21 because of this kind of people.
considered a freak in your on country but treated as a turistic attraction in another because you are seen from your own fellow nationals as an exotic birds to take pictures of when you are quitely enjoying your own life away from those narrow minded people. "ohhh it looks cool! but I would never do that on myself!" - how many time I heard about it. If you like it so much have the guts to do it and to know why you do it and tokeep on doing it even if you risk to be beaten up on the streets in the night by "normal" people.

hey Poison take a look to Cartier Bresson's work and think about it:
is he a non professional photographer because he had not asked permission to every person he photographed or he is a man who created great images?
Let's talk about privacy in London, are you joking?, there are more cameras along the streets than people!!!
I took a picture of a person who attracted my attention and you can't see his face that's all it's just a cool image that I don't think can ruins your friend's life.
Maybe those pseudo- punk guys in front of the gallery who asked money to be photographed ( I think two pounds for each photo) ruin the reputation of real punk of london.
Please read the comments to that picture do you think anybody is laughing at him?.
You talked about commercial or touristic use. What are you talking about I'm not selling this picture.

Anyway if your friend ask me to erase the picture and he gives to me valid reasons I'll erase it.
Take care!
Luca

grazie per la tua risposta,
the fact is very simple:

as Bresson did, every one of us is free to do whatever you want BUT you need to be able to accept the consequences of your actions even if they might cause some kind of clash (for example my reactiom to this).

I didn't talk ONLY about commercial use but I also (and mainly) talked about the attitude of people towards what is different when they are in different countries as opposed to when they are in their own country (punks do not look so exotic if seein in any square in Italy uh?).

Talk to people, why don't you ask and show them that you are not sneaking behind their shoulders like somebody that has something to hide, but you actually genuinely apreciate their image so much that you want to frame it, nothing wrong with that. I am also NOT saying that you HAVE to do it everytime but, in cases like this, when it's easy to see that you could have talked to him, it would have been polite to COMUNICATE.

I don't care much what others did in the past, to make a lame example Kurt Cobain killed himself and for this he will always been remembered but that doesn't mean that everybody can do the same to reach the same result..no?

At least those punks asking for 2 quids per picture are not exploited by people that do not have any respect for the personal life of others. I, when I do take picture with people in it I talk to them, before or after to ask permission.

Also, do not forget: if one day, somebody turns around and throws the camera on the floor, you will have to accept their reaction to your action.
Everybody is FREE to take picture of whatever you want as everybody else is FREE to react to it as I have done myself.

Don't get me wrong I LOVE this pic (is in my favs too ) but as a matter of principle, you could have talked to him since you were just a meter away behind his shoulder or just accept our reaction of disdain.
the feeling of being raped in the intimate privacy of our own life.

and remember
in that gallery you are NOT ALLOWED TO TAKE PICTURES

(as they most probably told you that day...)

take care and grazie per la risposta
ciao
S.
