Description I've added hair on the left side of 's portrait, maybe I'll work more on it... I don't know if I'm totally satisfied with it, though I like the fact that it's not so realistic and it still looks like a drawing

Now I'm using a thin paintbrush to draw the outlines of her lips.

Wow - your work is amazing. How much of the image do you do with a brush? The tone blending is perfect.

I LOVE the eyes too.

Every single shade/blending/tones' adjustment is made with brushes. I think 70% of the image is done with brushes

You're technique is beautiful. I've heard about using graphite dust for painting/drawing but I've never been brave enough to try it.

wow... you are so...so good! i hope to achieve your level of realism oneday.
i was wondering if u could help me, because your pictures seem to end up so smooth. mine always get the papers texture, is hot press watercolour paper smooth? because i always find smooth paper doesnt hold alot of pencil work.
and do u blend your pencil with water? to get that smooth look?
i love your stuff mine doesnt even compare now

LucaTedde In reply to butterflybutcher [2006-09-09 20:16:16 +0000 UTC]

so I don't use water.. never mix water with graphite!
I use brushes but in a dry way, like girls when they put on their make-up
and yes, ARCHES hotpress watercolor paper is really smooth yet captures graphite amazingly. I don't know if other brands do the same...

Hey, hi...
uhm... I use brushes instead of blending stumps or tortillons... I just use brushes to spread graphite all over the place and create shadows and gradients...

Great work on the hair, eyes especially, and her skin!!! I sooo wanna learn how you did that amazing drawing. I'll be buying my pencils sooner, which is the better one for drawing portraits like this? Staedtler or Derwent?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LucaTedde In reply to Cerhiby [2005-06-26 06:32:23 +0000 UTC]

Well, I used to use Staedtler pencils many years ago and I remember I loved them much!
I'm using Derwent pencils because I received them as Christmas gift one year ago...

Just buy one of both and try them doing some sketches... then choose the one you like more.

But, as you can see here on DA, many people use mechanical pencils and do beautiful works...

Cerhiby In reply to LucaTedde [2005-06-26 12:41:42 +0000 UTC]

heheh.....yeah mechanical pencils are cool, but you hafta change the lead one at a time...too time consuming...i still like it so

thanks for the advise!! i think i'll try staedtler first hehe

It's coming along nicely I think the ribbon-like quality of the hair makes her appear more youthful. I say keep it. Sometimes there is success without photographic perfection, and that's what I think you have here.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LucaTedde In reply to Zenatrix [2005-06-18 07:45:10 +0000 UTC]

Just yesterday I talked with a friend in the PencilChat about that ribbon-like quality of the hair...
...I'm not totally satisfied with it, it's been a long time since I've worked on smooth paper, I must say that rough paper help a lot in giving hair a more realistic effect.

So I must become confident with smooth paper again. I making a few changes to hair, adding some lines just to have a little more complicated effect to move the viewer's attention away from it.
I want people to look into her eyes.

*smile* I'm glad you are staying with it. It's always good to stretch your talent as far as it can go, though that's easier said than done. Many times we are our harshest critic, and then sometimes that motivates us.

Okay, although in chat i told you how i wasnt gonna comment until this was complete (to save you from yet another comment indenticle to X amount of people)

but i do have to say well done so far. I am really looking forward to seeing this completed.
I love how presice you are, you even have her faint frekles.

Just.... one thing i wanna point out on. Her eyes. You've done them beautifully. They are georgous. However, because they are light...i thought she had maybe green or blue eyes, not brown eyes. Perhaps its just me. but yea, maybe darkening the eyes a little?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LucaTedde In reply to Salacia-Mao [2005-06-17 11:24:26 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so so much for the comment, I really appreciated it.

Well, I know I've done her eyes so luminous, and that's how I drew her hair too!
She has darker hair than how I've rendered it.

I'll adjust all the tonal values at the end, where I can see how all the pieces are balanced.
Maybe I'll make it all darker... maybe not!

I think a portrait must capture someone's personality... not just be exactly equal to the reference photograph.
But time will bring changes...

Salacia-Mao In reply to LucaTedde [2005-06-17 16:45:43 +0000 UTC]

Youre welcome.

And yea your right about catpuring the personality. See... for me... i see peoples "personality" in their eyes (thats why my main attention is fixed on the eyes when i look at images.) When i saw how her eyes are light in your piece, (along with the other features) i saw innocence but with the dark border (sorry, i cant think of the right word) it was like... there is a sweet girl, but also, a maybe dangerous sweet girl. It makes me think of that rhyme about a girl with the girl in the middle of her head.

And when i saw the ref photo, i still thought her eyes held innocence. She seems like a sweet cheeky girl, instead of dark.

if that makes any sense. lol i babble to much.

LucaTedde In reply to feelinhungry [2005-06-17 07:43:55 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I always try to do eyes a bit better than the whole portrait... I think they must be the focus point, they must capture the viewer's attention...
