The view distance looks just fine
I didn't go swimming. It looks like I am, but I took it from the river bank looking under the arch.

One thing that annoys me though, is that even with the view distance set to the maximum, there is still a little fog, and then the terrain completely dissapears
One question... What exactly prompted you to go for a swim in the Odai River?

Uhm, I got it wrong anyway - pixelshading was on (it shades the pixels ) and anti aliasing was off which redrawns what's on the screen in a slight blur so the edges are smoother...
In other words the slight jaggedness is down to the settings put on, not the game itself.
I guess I see taking screenshots as a kind of easy photography
get Morrowind, it will make you happy
