For my current break of devoting my drawing to what I want to draw before I get back to the requests I have to get out of the way, I've decided to do a Green Lantern comic. This will specifically be an anthology, a decision influenced by the Tales of the Green Lantern Corps annuals and the direct-to-video film Green Lantern: Emerald Knights.

Our framing device consists of G'nort Esplanade G'neesmacher talking with Soranik Natu while she has time off from using her surgical skills to save the lives of Green Lantern Corpsmen who were injured in battle. Soranik makes it clear to G'nort that just because he's treated as a joke like the rest of the Corps doesn't mean he's the only Green Lantern with problems.

An example Soranik gives is her own issues with Kyle Rayner getting back with Jade and not having the courage to face him because she is ashamed of what she did to Kyle when she was manipulated by her father Thaal Sinestro into joining the Sinestro Corps (Soranik joining the Sinestro Corps was one horrible development from the Green Lantern comics that I'd really like DC to undo in the near future. While not a bad concept on paper, I'm peeved that Soranik just vanished after having a vicious falling out with Kyle in Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps and would've preferred she abandoned the Sinestro Corps and went back to wearing a green ring. Soranik betraying the GLC for the Sinestro Corps and Tomar-Tu being derailed and killed off are my two main least favorite developments from Robert Vendetti's run, and I find them even more irritating than the Lights Out arc).

The main point of this anthology is to tie up loose ends that were first established in a Christmas comic involving Jessica Cruz I was asked to do as a request.

The first story in the anthology, titled "So Near, Yet So Far", explores Hal Jordan and Carol Ferris/Star Sapphire, who in my interpretation of the DC Universe are now married, because I'm among the superhero comic fans who's sick to death of maintaining the status quo of the hero and their love interest not quite being together because of the difficulties the superhero lifestyle brings to their relationship. If Superman can marry Lois Lane and have a son without issue, there's no reason any other hero of the DC Universe can't do the same or similar (I'm fine with Batman's situation as his family being unconventional has been a core part of his character for quite some time, he got to have a daughter with Catwoman in at least one or two continuities and the only change I'd like to be made to the Bat-family would be for Alfred Pennyworth's death to be undone).

Anyway, we start this first tale with Hal Jordan confronting the Puppet King and Baby Doll (real name Mary Dahl), who have returned to Coast City after busting out of Arkham Asylum with the intent to get revenge against Hal Jordan.

To explain the details of what's going on, my interpretation of the Puppet King, a minor villain form the 2003 Teen Titans cartoon who was incidentally one of my favorite villains created for the cartoon who never showed up in the comics, is merged with minor Green Lantern villain the Puppeteer, who did fight the Teen Titans during the 1980s run and was apparently the Puppet King's inspiration.

For those of you who likely haven't read many comics that were published more than a decade ago, the Puppeteer was a villain Hal Jordan originally fought in the Silver Age and was difficult to beat because he was aware of Green Lantern's inability to use his ring on yellow objects at the time and wore a yellow costume. Hal ultimately got around that by using his ring to tie the Puppeteer's limbs up with suspensions and carry him to prison like he was a marionette.

After a Justice League story where he teamed up with Dr. Destiny and a few other lesser-known villains, the Puppeteer vanished for a time but eventually resurfaced in The New Teen Titans, where he tried to get the Titans to kill each other, but was defeated, with his last appearance having him among a group of villains united by Wildebeest, only to disappear party through the story. The other villains speculated that Wildebeest killed the Puppeteer, but this was never confirmed either way.

For my interpretation, the Puppeteer is now the Puppet King because Klarion the Witch Boy played a trick on him that resulted in his spirit being trapped inside a marionette. Seeing how well he'd do continuing to fight heroes other than Green Lantern, he took a shot at committing crimes in Gotham City and ended up going to Arkham Asylum after Batman took him down, which is why I have a habit of including Puppet King cameos whenever I draw scenes taking place at Arkham.

One of my more recent ideas is that the Puppet King as formed a bond with Baby Doll because they both have the misfortune of being confined to a body they have little control over, with Waylon Jones/Killer Croc also being in their group. I've made up my mind that my interpretation of Baby Doll's design will take cues both from her original look on Batman: The Animated Series and her redesign from the New Batman Adventures retool. The only new change I've made is exchanging her bare legs with striped leggings, as while she is canonically an adult who simply looks like a five-year-old because of her condition, I don't feel comfortable drawing females under 18 with bare legs and I feel that I have to walk on eggshells when it comes to deciding what to do with Baby Doll in my fan comics.

If you happen to be among the Green Lantern fans who don't see the appeal of Hal Jordan, I'll remind you that this is an anthology and I fully intend to use other Green Lanterns as well (specifically, Guy Gardner, John Stewart, Kyle Rayner, Simon Baz and Sojourner Mullein. Jessica Cruz won't be getting her own story, but I'll see if I can insert her in one of the others, as I've said several times before that I like ALL of the human Green Lanterns).
