Description Model: Vanessa
Taken: March 2009, Paris
Edited: PhotoScape

Check out my kickass border and text... felt like showing off a little. It was one of those evenings. It actually took me quite a while to be happy with this shot, and comments on both photo and editing are most welcome!

EDIT: Removed the distracting leaf, her ring, and darkened. For my dear *marshmallow-pies and ~emmaismyart

People seem to be bothered by the tones on this one... maybe I'll try redoing the tones at some point. Thanks for the comment!

You're welcome! I think it would just be looking so much neater with tones that articulate a decent word..

I really like this... But something feels wrong in the editing. I quite like the blue tinge you gave it, it gives it a great atmosphere, but I really don't know about how washed out she looks (especially around the face and on the feet especially - maybe darken it a bit and add more contrast?
On another note, the watch, ring and leaf are all killing me; they kind of break the mood, you know? I would agree with ~emmaismyart , you could just clone out the leaf, it isn't adding anything.

Edited, all except the watch. It would have been a little too difficult and I was scared of messing it up. I managed the leaf, the ring and the contrast though. Comments?

All forward motion is good. That's already better, although I still would like a tad more detail in the feet... Couldn't you select that area in Gimp, darken it and then push up the contrast? If you send it to me I'll play around with it to show you what I want if it's alright by you - besides, it's great distraction from revisions
How did Italian go by the way??? I just remembered!

GOSH woman are you fussy. Voila, your shoes!
And italian was fine, thanks. No clue how I did really, but no disasters. Revision is so boooooooring...!

But look at the bright side: I am now a fully satisfied costumer, as I can show you with a pretty little (although that watch still irks me... when I work with fantabulous models (like Baby V ), I must remember to ask them to remove watches...)

Did you read the comment above where I said I asked her to remove it like three shots later? She doesn't have it on in any of the other shots from that day
And yaaay at fav ^^

Nope, hadn't read that. Obviously it's a concern that everyone has

Much better I always forget to ask models to take off watches etc. I had about 40 shots from my last studio shoot with the model having a hair bobble around her wrist!lol

Haha yeah I know... I got this girl to take hers off about five shots later! It's annoying when you forget stupid (yet still annoying to post-process out) details like that!

It's a great photo, the crop works, the model's pose and expression are spot on and the exposure is ok, but perhaps a little dark. The big killer is your white balance seems quite a way off, and the whole shot looks blue. Your D40 will shoot in RAW, and a program called GIMP is great for working in pictures; it works just like photoshop, looks pretty much the same, and with the right plugin you can edit the .NEF raw files rom your D40. You could also clone out the leaf on the top step which doesn't really add anything.

Thanks for the comment

This photo is actually totally edited out- the initial white balance is fine, I just got bored with it. The slight orange tinge of her skin didn't quite fit the perfect white-pinkness of the tights, and so edited all the colours to make those two fit together, to give her more of a ballerina, almost doll-like look than that of a girl sitting by a sunny river.
And I use GIMP on a regular basis I just often can't be bothered to go through all the steps individually and use PhotoScape instead which is an easy shortcut alternative. I don't shoot in RAW, mostly out of lazyness (but also disk space), I will start investing in that after my exams.
That leaf really does detract, doesn't it! I'll probably clone it out. I like it though... not too sure why.

I also tinged the shot back slightly orangey to make the overall effect less blue and more natural, while keeping the initial softener effect on the skin and colours.

Ok, in which case, the processing doesn't work for me lol, but that's a very personal thing anyway. I really would shoot in raw though, for the price of a few more SD cards it's worth it. I only have about 5gb of memory with 3 cards, but it's enough to shoot over 1000 images or so, and I've never run out of space, and I work in studio for 4 hours at a time!

It's less the SD cards than the computer hard disk, and also the extra time it takes to process them later. I'm defintely considering it for a point when I have more time though!
Oh and running out of space on an SD is the most horrific thing...!

Tell me about it, I'm looking at going semi pro this year, but even second hand D200 bodies are pricey, and the lens I want for weddings is over £1000! I think it's worth you investing at some time though, you're very talented, and if you're producing work of that standard at 16, you're going to be truly awesome. I'm not sure how it works in France, but in the UK we can hire studio space, if you can do that, do it, it's really worth.

Also, check out [link] , it's a fantastic forum. Say I sent you, my user name there is ChrisMClark, and let me know when you sign up!

Definitely wishing to go semi-pro at some point. My D40 is fab (for what it is!), but I've had it for a year and a half now and have really evolved photographically over that period. Student years are not good years to try and invest money into such an expensive hobby...! I'm going to try and start charging for my headshot shoots, so that I can invest what money I get from my photography back into my photography, for the moment I haven't received any money from it, but it has to start some day right?

And i'm suscribed (username= lucky-april) - again, once the exams are down, I'll definitely check the place out. Thanks!
