*flails* so I think this may be my best piece yet...I am SUPER happy how this turned out. It was quite a process. If you look at the original horse photo, take notice that the horse was was a thin looking bay, more like a thoroughbred build. Also notice that it's ears are pricked forward. Well, I had already had the background picked out for this picture before choosing the horse that I wanted to fit with the image...and so when I saw the bay horse jumping over the obstacle in the original picture, I decided to take a risk and see what I could come up with. I am very pleased with the result, considering how different the finished product looks from the original horse. The inspiration for this piece comes from this character's name, Purgatory. Which when simplified means in between Heaven and Hell. I wanted a bulky black horse descending the stairs to Hell, because Purgatory is definately a dark character, and I wanted to portray that in this image. I added ears that pinned back, added some bulk to the legs, chest, and hooves, added feathers to the fetlocks, and of course a pretty flowing main and tail, oh and of course the glowering red eyes and blood dripping from his mouth.

This image was made for my friend to be used at this AWESOME site here [i'm an addict] - [link]

I really like the mixture of colours in this piece!
Although, focus is automatically drawn to the horse's rear instead of the face, as that's where the lightest part of the image. Might I suggest scooting the horse back further on the steps so his face is the focus instead?
Also, the tail looks a bit thin. What i do when that happens is take a medium colour from the tail, make a layer behind it and use a medium-sized medium-hardness brush to make it look thicker, and then burn and dodge in vague highlights to give it a bit of depth.
The shadow seems to be more of a reflection where it is, when it should really be beneath and slightly in front of him and more... glob-like and less defined, because the lighting isn't quite dramatic enough for the shadow how it is.
I do love how the stairs seem to blend seamlessly with the clouds around them, and the eye looks particularly good as well.

Cheers!

I adore the colors, and the way the smoke really fits in with the stairs! Beautiful job
