Magical March 2023 #11 Magical Boy Altaria It was supposed to say Magical Boy Alanzo up there but I accidently wrote Altaria instead and left it that way—it just sounded better. As you can see, having used up just about all my magical girl drawing ideas, but still in that mood, I switched to drawing boys. Magical boys have actually been a thing since He-Man first transformed back in 1983, but they werent officially recognized until Sailor Moon partnered up with a guy named Tuxedo Mask. Now we got some options. Like Li Syaoran from Cardcaptor Sakura, Daiskue from D.N.Angel, all the boys in Cute High Earth Defense Club, Magic Kaito, The Leafe Knights from Pretear, Fairy Ranmaru, Magical Girl Ore is a questionable one, and of course, Chat Noir from Miraculous Tales of Ladybug and Chat Noir. “Magical Boy” is a graphic novel, a book, and the story isnt what you think. So this girl was born into a family who were appointed by a goddess to protect the earth, so being a magical girl is something that runs in her family. Except this girl is different because she wants to be a he, wants to be who they really are and its something he struggles with. So imagine the efforts he takes to make his image fit who he really is (like chaning his name to Max), on top of liking guys so, this would make him a gay transgender male. Its a difficult situation for him, and of course mom couldn’t bother to tell him about being this magical girl defender-- whether he likes it or not--sooner in his life. So its quite a shock when one day, monsters pop up and thats when he’s told he has to fight these evil parasites that feed on peoples’ negative emotions to grow into monsters (Or something close to that--) and so he has to transform to use these powers and ends up in a sparkly magical dress, much to his great dismay. This poor kid, he just wants to be a normal boy, life is hard enough to navigate and now this happens? And its one of those realizations that he doesn’t really want this job, but if no one is there to protect the people, then all his friends will never stop being in danger, and so he realizes he has to do it. But Max learns along the way, the more he battles these things, the more control he has over these magical powers, which actually, at least, does allow him to be able to shape his magical girl outfit into something more masculine, but it takes a few tries to get it to look just right. So if he has to do this job, then he’s going to do it as a magical boy. Its a great book and it was super easy to collect because it was only two volumes long and is completely colored. I really wanted to draw Valentine as a magical boy but I ended up with Alanzo because his colors would pull this outfit together much better than Valentine could. I had a hard time finding a decent reference for Max’s final outfit, so I but together a collage of images to see if I could at least come close. Except for the shoes, I changed those into sexy little boots because that fits more with a magical outfit. As a magical boy, his hair turns white and there are circular designs in his eyes that I couldn’t really make out too well. So I ended up putting golden circles in Alanzo’s eyes to sort of mimic that look. And in his final form, he has a pair of transparent wings. Thats why I didn’t mind that the wings I drew here sort of blend into the background. I loved the colors of Max’s outfit and that was definitely a visual that made me interested in buying his books. His outfit has more sparkles on it than any magical girl outfit ive ever seen; Though if this story ever got animated, those would probably be left off the outfit to make animating easier. Its so pretty while still being masculine, I love it! So I tried to draw Alanzo in his outfit as close as I can, though you might have noticed that I took a short cut in all these drawings by not including their magical wands, and yeah, Max has a magic want, too. Alanzo is an Altaria, so if pokemon could be people, and they are when you turn them into Sonic Fcs, then Altaria would definitely be magical whether they are boys or girls, so Alanzo really was the perfect choice for this Magical Boy dress up.
