FUN FACT: Apatosaurus Was the First-Ever Cartoon Dinosaur

In 1914, Winsor McCay--best known for his comic strip Little Nemo in Slumberland--premiered Gertie the Dinosaur, a short animated film featuring a realistically hand-drawn Brontosaurus. (Early animation entailed arduously painting individual "cels" by hand; computer animation didn't become widespread until the late 20th century.) Since then, Apatosaurus (usually referred to by its more popular name) has been featured in countless TV shows and Hollywood movies.

This is a model of a little green dinosaur that I made out of green pom-poms and felt. For his legs and neck I sewed the felt to make tubes and stuffed them with little scraps of fabric to make them hold their shape (like what I did with my model of the Pokemon Amaura). I did the same for his tail--I cut two triangles out of felt, sewed them together, and stuffed them before gluing them to the dinosaur. His eyes are googly eyes, and his mouth and nostrils were drawn on with black acrylic paint. This dinosaur is 2 1/4 inches (5.72 cm) in both length and height. He's a square.
